Brillouin Scattering, Part Two, Volume 110 in the Semiconductors and Semimetal series, marks the centenary of Leon Brillouin's seminal 1922 paper which provided a detailed theory on the effect that now bears his name. Sections in this new release include Optical Fiber Sensors Based on Stimulated Brillouin scattering, Brillouin-based RF frequency sources, SBS for Microwave Photonics (MWP), Engineerable Brillouin processes for integrated photonics, SBS in optical communication systems - the good, the bad and the ugly, Slow light, dynamic gratings and light storage, Non-reciprocity in Brillouin scattering, Electromechanical Brillouin Scattering, and Brillouin light scattering for studying mechanics of biological systems. Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is the strongest third order nonlinearity and plays an important role in contemporary science and applications, particularly lasers, communications, fiber optics and basic physics. This volume provides different perspectives on current technological contexts of SBS in a range of different application areas, including sensing, communications, radar, imaging and information storage. - Presented by the leading researchers in the field - Covers both scientific and technological perspectives - Provides different perspectives on current technological contexts of SBS in a range of different application areas, including sensing, communications, radar, imaging and information storage

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are recognized for their versatility and efficiency in controlling and processing electrical signals. This has resulted in a multitude of device concepts for a wide range of signal processing functions, such as delay lines, filters, resonators, pulse compressors, convolvers, and many more. As SAW technology has found its way into mass market products such as TV receivers, pagers, keyless entry systems and cellular phones, the production volume has risen to millions of devices produced every day. At the other end of the scale, there are specialized high performance signal processing SAW devices for satellite communication and military applications, such as radar and electronic warfare. This volume, together with Volume 2, presents an overview of recent advances in SAW technology, systems and applications by some of the foremost researchers in this exciting field.

Polarization Effects in Semiconductors: From Ab Initio Theory to Device Applications presents the latest understanding of the solid state physics, electronic implications and practical applications of the unique spontaneous or pyro-electric polarization charge of wurtzite compound semiconductors, and associated piezo-electric effects in strained thin film heterostructures. These heterostructures are used in wide band gap semiconductor based sensors, in addition to various electronic and opto-electronic semiconductor devices. The book covers the ab initio theory of polarization in cubic and hexagonal semiconductors, growth of thin film GaN, GaN/AlGaN GaAlN/ AlGaInN, and other nitrides, and SiC heterostructures. It discusses the effects of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization on band diagrams and electronic properties of abrupt and compositionally graded heterostructures, electronic characterization of polarization-induced charge distributions by scanning-probe spectroscopies, and gauge factors and strain effects. In addition, polarization in extended defects, piezo-electric strain/charge engineering, and application to device design and processing are covered. The effects of polarization on the fundamental electron transport properties, and on the basic optical transitions are described. The crucial role of polarization in devices such as high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is covered. The chapters are authored by professors and researchers in the fields of physics, applied physics and electrical engineering, who worked for 5 years under the "Polarization Effects in Semiconductors" DOD funded Multi Disciplinary University Research Initiative. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in the field of wide-bandgap semiconductor physics and their device applications. It will also be useful for practicing engineers in the field of wide-bandgap semiconductor device research and development.

Trapping effects in III-V devices pose a great challenge to any microwave device modeler. Understanding their physical origins is of prime importance to create physics-related reliable device models. The treatment of trapping phenomena is commonly beyond the classical higher-education level of communication engineers. This book provides any basic material needed to understand trapping effects occurring primarily in GaAs and GaN power HEMT devices. As the text material covers interdisciplinary topics such as crystal defects and localized charges, trap centers and trap dynamics, deep-level transient spectroscopy, and trap centers in passivation layers, the book will be of interest to graduate students of electrical engineering, communication engineering, and physics as well as materials, device, and circuit engineers in research and industry.
