What is this book about? Its power and short learning curve have made Access Microsoft’s leading consumer relational database management system for desktop applications. VBA lets you tap more of that power, responding to application level events, displaying forms and reports, manipulating toolbars, and much more. In this book, a crack team of programmers, including two Microsoft MVPs, shows you how to take control of Access 2003 or 2002 using VBA. You’ll learn to create and name variables, use DAO and ADO to manipulate data, handle errors correctly, create classes and use APIs, and more. An entire chapter is devoted to the changes in Access 2003, including new wizards and GUI features that previously required VBA code as well as new VBA features. You’ll receive a thorough education in system security, macro security, and the Access Developer Extensions (ADE). You will discover how to access data with VBA, execute and debug VBA code, and use VBA with Access objects. Finally, you will learn more about the relationship between Access and SQL Server, and how to use VBA in Access to control and enhance other Office applications. What does this book cover? Here are some of the things you'll discover in this book: How to take advantage of the built-in Access object library, using Access commands and executing them from any Access toolbar What you need to know to design your own classes, implement common APIs in your code, and use SQL to access data How to configure custom menus for your Access database applications Ways to transfer information between Access and Excel, Word, Outlook, and other Office programs How to show or hide entire sections of reports based on data entered on a form, or hide form fields based on database login information Object models you can use when writing VBA code in Access, and a list of common API functions to use in your code Who is this book for? This book is a comprehensive resource for Access users and VBA developers who want to increase the power of Access using VBA. In addition to experience with VBA, you should have read at least one tutorial covering VBA for Access.

As digital technologies are expanding the power and reach of research, they are also raising complex issues. These include complications in ensuring the validity of research data; standards that do not keep pace with the high rate of innovation; restrictions on data sharing that reduce the ability of researchers to verify results and build on previous research; and huge increases in the amount of data being generated, creating severe challenges in preserving that data for long-term use. Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age examines the consequences of the changes affecting research data with respect to three issues - integrity, accessibility, and stewardship-and finds a need for a new approach to the design and the management of research projects. The report recommends that all researchers receive appropriate training in the management of research data, and calls on researchers to make all research data, methods, and other information underlying results publicly accessible in a timely manner. The book also sees the stewardship of research data as a critical long-term task for the research enterprise and its stakeholders. Individual researchers, research institutions, research sponsors, professional societies, and journals involved in scientific, engineering, and medical research will find this book an essential guide to the principles affecting research data in the digital age.

The demand and the costs for higher education have risen steeply in recent years. The most common response worldwide has been some form of cost sharing: shifting per-student costs from governments and taxpayers to parents and students. This timely book provides a comprehensive discussion of the concepts and consequences of cost-sharing in higher education. It offers a comparative approach based on several national case-studies, and proposes alternatives to prevalent approaches.

Contents Should we tell you the whole story? Of course, there is an inevitable tension in trying to work like this. For example, in Chapter 16 we talk about referential integrity. There are - sentially six different flavors of referential integrity but Access only s- ports four of them (they are the most important ones however, so you aren’t missing out on too much). The problem is this. Should we tell you about the other two? If we do, as an Access user you have every right to be annoyed that we are telling you about a feature you can’t use. On the other hand, the six different types that we describe are part of the re- tional world and this book is about that world – we are not trying to teach you how to use Access, we are simply using Access to illustrate the relational model. Ultimately we decided to risk your ire and to describe all of the features of the relational model as we see it, even if Access doesn’t support all of them. One advantage of this approach is that if you need to use a different database engine you will almost certainly find the extra information useful. Incidentally, this is not meant to imply that Access is somehow lacking as a relational database engine. The reason we chose it for the first book is that it is such a good example of a relational database tool.
