Excerpt from A Volume of Memoirs and Genealogy of Representative Citizens of Northern California: Including Biographies of Many of Those Who Have Passed Away The elements of success in life consist in both innate capacity and deter mination to excel. W'here either is wanting, failure is almost certain in the outcome. The study of a successful life, therefore, serves both as a source of information and as a stimulus and encouragement to those who have the capacity. As an important lesson in this connection we may appropriately quote Longfellow, who said \ve judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while we judge others by what they have already done. A faithful personal history is an illustration of the truth of this observation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Far from being simply a reference tool, the book provides a rich trove of fascinating narratives that cover both the professional and personal lives of a colorful cast of characters.

Norton Parker Chipman is best known for successfully prosecuting Henry Wirz, the infamous commander of the Confederacy's Andersonville Prison where more than 13,000 Union soldiers died during the American Civil War. A Union officer, Chipman participated in many important events during and after the Civil War. He accompanied President Lincoln to Gettysburg and worked directly with Secretary of War Stanton. Later, he represented the District of Columbia as its delegate to Congress, led the fund-raising to complete the Washington Monument and wrote the order creating Memorial Day. He rose to prominence in California's burgeoning agribusiness and served many years as a state Supreme Court commissioner and a Court of Appeal presiding justice. This biography provides intimate accounts of a wounded combat officer's perspective of the Civil War, a Washington insider's view of the postwar capital and a veteran's influence in shaping and developing California.

Czech it Out: Czech American Biography Sourcebook provides a wealth of information on a variety of sources relating to biographical information on notable Americans with Czech roots. Besides the national figures, also included are information sources on significant individuals at the state, regional, and local levels. Beyond that, we saw it fit to also incorporate ethnic information sources, which frequently contain a wealth of information on pioneer settlers and individuals active at the community level. Having in mind the interests of genealogists in individual families and their descendents, a listing has also been provided on family histories and genealogies. Even though Czechs have been living in the US practically since colonial times, no composite biographical dictionary exists about the accomplished Czech Americans. Biographical information about them is scattered in a plethora of sources, which are difficult to find and some are not readily accessible. The present author, who, literally, devoted several decades of his life to the study of Czech-American history, has canvassed hundreds of sources at national and local levels to identify, not only notable individuals but also pioneer settlers who played a significant role in the growth and development of the US. This publication should fill a great void in literature until a comprehensive biographical compendium about Czech Americans has been written.
