Excerpt from A Treatise on the Calculus of Finite Differences As such Treatises as the present are in close connexion with the course of Mathematical Study at the University Of Cambridge, there is considerable difficulty in deciding the question how far they should aim at being exhaustive. I have held it best not to insert investigations that involve complicated analysis unless they possess great suggestiveness or are the bases Of important developments of the subject. Under the present system the premium on wide superficial reading is so great that such investigations, if inserted. Excerpt from A Treatise on Differential Equations, and on the Calculus of Finite Differences Every differential equation of the first order and degree is either the direct derived equation of a primitive; or it results from the combination of the derived equation with its primitive, so as to eliminate a constant which enters in each only to the first power; the former sort are called exact, the latter inexact. Excerpt from A Collection of Examples of the Applications of the Calculus of Finite Differences The want of a regular treatise, on the Calculus of Differ ences in our language, has long been a serious obstacle to the progress of the enquiring student. The Appendix annexed to the translation of Lacroix's Differential and Integral Calculus, although from the necessity of studying compression it is not so complete as its author could have wished, will, it is hoped, remove this obstacle in some degree, and at least put the analytical principles of the pure theoretical part of the calculus in the reader's power. But the method of applying those principles, and the formulm derived from them, to the various cases and questions of pure, as well as mixed mathematics, in which they may be advantageously introduced, also demands some degree of explanation, and accordingly, in such of our examples as have this for their object, the reader will find the successive steps of the pro cesses fully detailed, till the questions are reduced to such analytical difliculties, as the Appendix, or the preceding problems will enable him to surmount by himself. 2014 Reprint of 1872 Revised Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Reprint of revised and improved 1872 edition. Self-taught British mathematician and father of Boolean algebra, George Boole (1815-1864) published the first edition of "A Treatise on the Calculus of Finite Differences" in 1860 as a sequel to his "Treatise on Differential Equations." Both books became instant classics that were used as textbooks for many years and eventually became the basis for our contemporary digital computer systems. The book discusses direct theories of finite differences and integration, linear equations, variations of a constant, and equations of partial and mixed differences. Boole also includes exercises for daring students to ponder, and also supplies answers. Long a proponent of positioning logic firmly in the camp of mathematics rather than philosophy, Boole was instrumental in developing a notational system that allowed logical statements to be symbolically represented by algebraic equations. One of history's most insightful mathematicians, Boole is compelling reading for today's student of logic and Boolean thinking.
