Excerpt from A Student's Book on Soils and Manures Whatever kind of farming a man is going in for, he depends in the last instance either on his own soil or on somebody else's, and unless he thoroughly understands the principles of soil management he will not be very successful in the crop production part of his work. These principles can of course be acquired by experience, but the process is likely to be costly, and the young farmer of to-day is invited to attend Farm Institutes or Colleges where he can be taught them and be thus spared some of the bitterness of the older method. By learning something about the soil and about fertilisers he will be in a position to attain greater success in his farming. But the man who simply studies the subject to make a little more money will miss nine-tenths of the pleasure of the work and of the joy of farming. The soil is to be regarded not simply as a mine out of which a little wealth may be extracted, but as a part of Nature, just as wonderful and as worthy of study as any other part. Excerpt from Soils and Fertilizers The discovery of oxygen by Priestley in 1774, of the composition of water by Cavendish in 1781, and of the role which carbon dioxide plays in plant and animal life by De Saussure and others in 1800, formed the nucleus of our present knowledge regarding the sources of matter stored up in plants. It was between 1760 and 1800 that alchemy lost its grip because of advances in knowledge and the way was opened for the development of modern chemistry. Excerpt from The Progressive Farmer: A Scientific Treatise on Agricultural Chemistry, the Geology of Agriculture; On Plant, Animals, Manure, and Soils, Applied to Practical Agriculture Also, calcium, an element, will combine with the ele ment, oxygen, precisely 20 lbs. Of the first to 8 lbs. Of the last, and form 28 lbs. Of quick-lime. Now, if we take these two compounds, water and quick-lime, 9 lbs. Of the former will combine with 28 lbs. Of the latter, and form 37 lbs. Of slacked lime. It is true, you might put more than 9 lbs. Of water to 28 lbs. Of lime, but the excess would soon evaporate, leaving precisely 9 lbs. Combined with the. Lime in the form of a dry, white powder, (water-slacked lime). If you were to put less than 9 lbs. Of water to 28 of lime, then only a part of the lime would be slacked; and in order to slack the whole, you would have to continue putting on water till you had reached the 91bs., when the whole would be reduced to a dry, white powder. It is so with all chemical combinations they are always in definite, fixed and unalterable proportions. In this respect they differ from mere mixtures, which may be in any proportions. Excerpt from Soils and Crops of the Farm Plants live and grow. Growth comes from food. Plant food must come from, or through, the soil or air, or both. Plants cannot move about to seek food. They do not have mouths like those of animals. They cannot take in solid substances. Their food must be brought into contact with them and be either liquid or gaseous in form. Finding out of what a plant is composed will help to an understanding of how and from whence it gets its food.
