Excerpt from A Treatise of the Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lectures on the Materia Medica formerly published in my name, though very incorrect, were so well received by the public, that notwithstanding my endeavours to prevent it, they have been several times reprinted, and even translated into foreign languages. This mark of public favour led me to think of giving a more correct and complete edition of those Lectures; but finding that it was not possible for me to give it, with the corrections and supplements which would be necessary, in a satisfying manner, I have long abandoned that idea, and judged it more proper to give an almost entirely new work; which I endeavour to do in the present publication. Cullen's ar rangement, which is principally founded Upon the general effects of medicinal agents, and partly also, in its minor subdivisions, upon their physical relations, is still viewed by many, and I believe justly too, as the most perfect classification that has hitherto been offer ed upon this subject. But even this arrangement does not bring into view all those general analogies which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This, however, was necessary upon my plan, and will I hope be found useful. With respect to the order in which medicines are to be considered, I have endeavoured above to determine what is the most proper plan for the purpose; and accordingly I have given a table explaining the whole of it. Excerpt from Therapeutics and Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2: A Systematic Treatise on the Action and Uses of Medicinal Agents, Including Their Description and History Sous years have elapsed since the present work was undertaken and announced, but its completion has been delayed by several causes, the chief of which were the author's election to the chair of Theory and Practice of Medicine in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania Col lege, and the onerous duties which that ofiice imposed upon him during a period of five years. The studies which they rendered necessary have tended greatly to enlarge the original plan of his treatise, and have also, it is hoped, rendered it more worthy than it would otherwise have been of a favorable reception by physicians and students of Medicine. Intended for those who desire to learn the surest methods of curing disease, it has seemed not only allowable, but imperative, that in the form of the work scientific unity and precision should be subordinated to practical utility. At the same time, it would have been unpardonable to leave out of sight those fragments of scientific knowledge which may one day serve to bridge the chasm between theory and practice, and convert the precepts of therapeutics into laws. Excerpt from A Treatise of the Materia Medica and Therapeutics: Two Volumes in One When we fix our attention upon a diversity of mixed objects, we naturally, andalmost unconscious ly, begin our inquiries by separating them into groups or families, according to their various analo gies or resemblances. We thus obtain a general viewof their common and partial relations; and are thereby better enabled to investigate their individual characters, as well as to retain what We have learned concerning them, by the influence of association. 'we become systematic from the very constitution of the human mind. To classify our ideas is the first step we take towards useful knowledge; and the highest attainments of intellect are but a more ex tensive and intimate view of' the various relations which subsist between the objects of human know ledge. Excerpt from A Treatise of Therapeutics and Pharmacology, or Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2 There are a few abbreviations used throughout the work which require explana tion. The letters U. S., attached to a medicinal name or process, are to be under stood as referring to the authority of the existing United States Pharmacopoeia; Br., to that of the first British Pharmacopoeia published in 1864; and Land, Ed, Dub., to that of the last Pharmacopoeias published by the London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Colleges respectively, but now superseded by the British. In an Appendix will be found tables showing the differences between the British Pharmacopoeia recently published, and the first edition of that work, published in 1864, which has been recognized throughout this Treatise as the British standard. Excerpt from A Treatise on Materia Medica, (Including Therapeutics and Toxicology), Vol. 1 We have not hesitated to give utterance to a belief in the uselessness of many well liked, and still frequently prescribed remedies, when they have been proved insufficient for the accomplishment of accepted indications, or can be replaced by better agents and means. In regard to the selection of the remedies we have not been able to adhere to the German Pharmacopoeia, because the progress of science has far surpassed it we have marked with a star all remedies not found in it. Further in reference to the maximum doses of the Pharmacopoeia they correspond with our own, only in those cases where they proceed from the spirit of the decimal system, and that wherever this was not the case, we have made changes in accordance with the decimal system.
