This is a romance set in France and starts in Nice at the time of the Carnival. The Casino is thronged with a very diverse collection of humanity; kings and princes; bourgeois and working class. The protagonists of the story are three Americans, a man and two women, who as the novel begins, are seated in a corner of one of the gambling halls.

Excerpt from A Tragic Idyl That night (toward the end of February, 188-) a vast crowd was thronging the halls of the Casino at Monte Carlo. It was one of the momentary occasions, well known to all who have passed the winter season on the Corniche, when a sudden and prodigious afflux of composite humanity transfigures that place, ordinarily so vulgar with the brutal luxury of the people whom it satisfies.
