An electron density model, which permits a three-dimensional specification of the ionospheric structure, has been developed. The model generates realistic electron density profiles in the altitude range from 100 to 800 km by making use of selected ionospheric parameters that are routinely observed. The model also allows for the calculation of the electron distribution over the entire path of propagation of a radio signal by employing a synoptic mapping technique. The mapping technique enagles ionospheric parameters observed at specific locations to be extended and extrapolated to regions where data are not normally accessible. The electron densities that are computed are done in a manner that is totally consistent with the observed parameters needed to generate the profiles. (Author).

Authored by leading international researchers, this monograph introduces and reviews developed tomograhic methods for discovering 2D and 3D structures of the ionosphere, and discusses the experimental implementation of these methods. The detailed derivations and explanations make this book an excellent starting point for non-specialists.

This book presents carefully edited and peer-reviewed papers from the 2nd International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate (OPAC-2), held in Graz, Austria. It starts with a general introductory paper and proceeds to address the full range from methodology in general via specific occultation methods (GNSS-LEO, LEO-LEO, stellar and solar) to the use of occultation data, with focus on atmospheric physics, meteorology and climate.

This report describes a radio investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances carried out near Boulder, Colorado, over a 1-year period from June 1967 to June 1968. The three-dimensional motions of F2 layer disturbances were measured by the high frequency Doppler technique with spaced transmitters and at several probing frequencies. Horizontal motions were determined by cross-correlating three signals on frequencies near 5 MHz, whose reflection points were approximately at the corners of a horizontal equilateral triangle with 40-km sides. Vertical motions were determined from cross-correlation of signals on frequencies of 3.3, 4.0, and 5.1 MHz, whose reflection points were aligned vertically.

Investigations performed towards the development of improved models of the ionosphere are described. The study was directed at improving existing prediction models of ionospheric parameters. This lead to the development of techniques to update on a global basis monthly median predictions of (f sub o) F2 and M(3000)F2. A new electron density model is presented which allows the user to make a full three dimensional ionosphere for use in a variety of HF radio applications. Extensive tests are presented which explore the model's accuracy. Parts of a separate model for the polar region has been consolidated and incorporated in programs for the evaluation of HF performance criteria.

An instrument to remotely determine neutral density profiles in the lower thermosphere has been developed. The instrument observes ultraviolet airglow profiles in two bands: the 3371 A band for nitrogen and the 1356 A band for atomic oxygen to infer atmospheric density. Calculations of the intensities of these emissions have been made using the recent computations of energy dependent photoelectron fluxes and experimental determinations of the excitation cross section.
