Tests of a newly designed operational system show that the earth's vector magnetic field can be measured from a sounding-rocket nose cone by (a) determining the attitude of a rocket nose cone by means of an electromagnetic attitude-sensor using antenna-array signal-strength patterns; (b) making vector magnetic measurements within the rocket nose cone by means of switched bias coils and a cesium vapor magnetometer; (c) encoding and telemetering the resulting information in a format compatible with the existing facilities; and (d) developing computational techniques for reducing the data obtained from the system. This report summarizes the results of feasibility tests to measure the earth's vector magnetic field from a Javelin rocket, and describes briefly the missile and ground electronic systems that have been designed to make the measurement. The program is directed to: Determining the attitude of a Javelin rocket nose cone by means of an electromagnetic attitude sensor using antenna-array signalstrength patterns. Making vector component magnetic measurements within the rocket nose cone by means of switched bias coils and a caesium vapor magnetometer. Encoding and telemetering the resulting information in a format compatible with the existing facilities. Developing computational techniques for reducing the data obtained from the above system. A flight evaluation of a system for the measurement of earth magnetic field components, using a vapor magnetometer and orthogonal biasing coils is described. The magnetic field components relative to an earth-fixed frame is inferred from the output of an antenna array installed for the purpose of establishing vehicle orientation relative to a ground based illuminating radar beam. The flight vehicle, ground based instrumentation, and data reduction techniques are described. Two vehicle launches were carried out from the Churchill Research Range. Payload tumbling in both flights prevented full evaluation of the measurement system. (Author).
