Excerpt from A Student's Book on Soils and Manures Whatever kind of farming a man is going in for, he depends in the last instance either on his own soil or on somebody else's, and unless he thoroughly understands the principles of soil management he will not be very successful in the crop production part of his work. These principles can of course be acquired by experience, but the process is likely to be costly, and the young farmer of to-day is invited to attend Farm Institutes or Colleges where he can be taught them and be thus spared some of the bitterness of the older method. By learning something about the soil and about fertilisers he will be in a position to attain greater success in his farming. But the man who simply studies the subject to make a little more money will miss nine-tenths of the pleasure of the work and of the joy of farming. The soil is to be regarded not simply as a mine out of which a little wealth may be extracted, but as a part of Nature, just as wonderful and as worthy of study as any other part. Excerpt from Soils and Manures In a few instances analytical methods have been briefly outlined as a convenient plan of developing certain ideas, but details have been avoided. Many of the figures relating to the composition of manures are taken from published reports by Dr. Voelcker and others, but some of them are average results of numerous analyses made by the author. Excerpt from Manures and Fertilizers: A d104-Book for College Students and a Work of Reference for All Interested in the Scientific Aspects of Modern Farming The preparation of this volume was undertaken for the purpose of meeting a distinct lack in collegiate agricultural textbooks in the United States. It was hoped to prepare a book reasonably free from extended details, such as are found in certain of the larger foreign works, and likewise to avoid the rather superficial treatment of the subjects which has necessarily characterized many of the books which have been written for the purpose of meeting the earlier requirements of the American agricultural colleges, and the present demands of agricultural high schools. The intent has been to provide in a measure for the needs of the graduate student in agriculture; also for the requirements of students in the agricultural colleges, teachers in agricultural schools, graduates of agricultural schools and colleges, agricultural institute lecturers, and the rapidly increasing number of intelligent men who are daily interesting themselves in the scientific phases of modern farming. In connection with the treatment of some of the newer and more controversial phases of certain of the topics, authorities have been cited freely, in order that the reader may readily pursue the subjects further, if desired. These citations have been introduced at the bottom of the respective pages, so as to permit of more convenient and ready reference than would be possible if they were placed at the ends of chapters, or at the end of the volume. Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farming were written in a technical style. They smacked of the lecture room and the library rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known. Excerpt from Soils and Fertilizers, for Public Schools: A Discussion Upon the Nature and Treatment of Soils and the Value of Fertilizers In order to make Agriculture interesting to the pupil, we must base the work upon real practical problems which he can understand and appreciate. To do this is no small task, and it is a thing which demands a great deal of perseverance and initiative, on the part of teachers In such schools. The more ideas which an author attempts to incorporate into a text book, the more complex his text becomes, and the more difficult it is to follow. Therefore, in this text book we have taken' only a few of the most important conditions and have tried to incorporate them in such a manner that they can be used by the average district or graded school. We have tried further to make the book correct - theoretically and practically. The entire text has been written for boys and girls of the country schools, with these two things in mind, and the success which attends its use presupposes a proper presentation of many minor details, which it would 'be impossible to include under this cover. Many teachers get the idea that the sub J ect of Agriculture as taught in our public schools is a Vocational Sub J ect. This is' a mistaken idea, and the teachers should above all bear in mind that we are not making better farmers so much as we are making better men and women who are farmers. Naturally the teaching of Agriculture will make better farmers; and will serve to keep more of our boys on the farm. Excerpt from Soils and Fertilizers The discovery of oxygen by Priestley in 1774, of the composition of water by Cavendish in 1781, and of the role which carbon dioxide plays in plant and animal life by De Saussure and others in 1800, formed the nucleus of our present knowledge regarding the sources of matter stored up in plants. It was between 1760 and 1800 that alchemy lost its grip because of advances in knowledge and the way was opened for the development of modern chemistry. Excerpt from Peat as a Manure Substitute The other English experiments which are referred to above, however, have given little or no support to the claims made by Bottomley. Chittenden and Russell, in particular, have gone on record as saying that, in their experiments, the plants grown on soils treated with the bacterized peat do not seem to have been affected beneficially any more than plants grown on similar soils not treated with that substance. In view of the fact that such careful experimenters, prob ably among the most conservative in the field of agricultural science, have made these statements renders it necessary for any one commenting on the subject in question to decide that the public will be unjustly and unscientifically advised if it is not warned that many more experiinents by careful students of the sub ject are necessary before the exact facts in the case can be ascertained. In view, therefore, of this situation, coupled with the traditional information which we have always had relative to the inert nature of peat and its ineffectiveness when applied to soils, make it necessary for me to advise against the acceptance by the public of any statements made on the superior nature of inoculated as against uninoculated peat, as well as on its value as a source. Of nitrogen and even of organic matter to soils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
