Durrell's best-known work fused Western notions of time and space with Eastern metaphysics. Very little has been written about Durrell's work before the Second World War. With A Smile in His Mind's Eye, Ray Morrison seeks to redress this neglect.

In that light it is secondly dedicated to: her friends and acquaintances in Fantasy Role-play for their ideas and laughter at her muse; for taking the time to read a story or two of hers in helping her to decide to complete the book. Thank You my friends for your time, trouble and thoughts on my writing. I can only hope I have done all of you proud. "Aye lad, The Sea has been my mistress some 40 years now. Stories? In this Victorian romance, a bakery heir’s path to high society takes a detour after succumbing to temptation with a ravishing widow. Ann Haldene is the most beautiful woman Gawain Redcake has ever seen. A gifted healer who soothes his battle-scarred body like never before, the widow’s touch has a powerful effect on him. It’s no wonder the rugged Redcake heir forgets his quest for a society bride during one passionate night in Ann’s arms. But once he learns she is pregnant with his child, he searches for her, intent on giving her his name, if not his heart . . . Ann is shocked by Gawain’s proposal, mostly because he has not uttered a word of love. For the sake of their baby, she accepts, even knowing that Gawain dreamed of marrying to secure a title and all she has is a severed royal Indian bloodline. Now the new bride faces her greatest challenge: showing her husband that their union is more powerful than pedigree—and love is the ultimate reward . . . “A delightful, sexy glimpse into Victorian life and loving with two wonderfully non-traditional lovers.” —Jessa Slade, author of Dark Prince’s Desire and the Steel Born series “This fast-paced read is both sweet and fun. It’s rare to find historical romances that feature couples who are of anything but Anglo-Saxon decent, and this one does a solid job of addressing some of these difficulties.” —Library Journal

This novel starts with a prologue dealing with the mythology surrounding the development of two different species of mankind: the group of people designated as Homo Sapiens and the much smaller subtype know as Cro-Magnon Man. The action starts immediately with the two groups clashing and then differentiating into the development of civilizations populated by Homo Sapiens but mentored by Cro-Magnon known as the Coruscus. As the adventure develops other themes come into play. “The capacity of the Coruscus to influence the whims of nature has been characterized by numerous titles, the most common of which is known as magic.” Magic is the undercurrent of this action adventure but there are more themes which become sophisticated in both concept and presentation. For example, the idea of life beyond death is explored. There are detailed description of Virgil’s journey into the realms of life beyond this physical plane. There are also metaphysical themes running through this novel with detailed descriptions of chakra meditations as necessary preparations for Virgil to enter into the realms beyond the first plane of physical life. The dark side of human nature is explored but mostly in the context of an adventure story about the Coruscus known as Virgil and his warrior companion known as Glaiden. The story describes how their relationship was developed and how their efforts to evade the overwhelming Roman forces of the rouge Coruscus known as Baracore. When evasion is no longer an option, battles ensue.

Besides being a football coach at his Michigan High School, Mike Kersjes taught special education classes, dealing with children whose disabilities included Tourette syndrome, Downs Syndrome, dyslexia, eating disorders and a variety of emotional problems. One autumn Kersjes got the outlandish idea that his students would benefit from going to Space Camp, where, in conjunction with NASA, high school students compete in a variety of activities similar to those experienced by astronauts in training for space shuttle missions. There was only one problem: this program had been specifically designed for gifted and talented students, the best and the brightest from America's most privileged high schools. Kersjes believed that, given a chance, his kids could do as well as anybody, and with remarkable persistence broke down one barrier after another, from his own principal's office to the inner sanctum of NASA, until Space Camp opened its doors, on an experimental basis, to special ed students. After nine months of rigorous preparation, during which the class molded itself into a working team, they arrived at Space Camp, where they turned in a performance so startling, so surprising, that it will leave the reader breathless. A truly triumphant story of the power of the human spirit.
