Excerpt from Bookkeeping for Farmers: A Treatise on Farm Accounts Many books have been written on the subject of business education and bookkeeping, but we have looked in vain for a treatise on the keeping of farm accounts, which is at once comprehensive, and yet so stripped of unnecessary complications that the average farmer may practice what it teaches. We have examined numerous text books on the subject and many blank-books, arranged for the purpose of keeping farm accounts, but all of them seem more complicated than is necessary for the use of the great majority of everyday farmers. Our object in the preparation of this little book is to remove from the subject of farm accounts, as far as possible, every thing which might tend to confuse the practical farmer, and so simplify the whole matter that those who read this book will find pleasure in recording their farm operations. If we succeed in this, our work will not have been without results. Editor's Note. To Prof. Atkeson's outline is added, in part II., a description of a somewhat different, but very simple and practical method. The two are sufficient to enable any person, though ignorant of the profession of bookkeeping, to begin and maintain a simple system of accounts that will enable them to know just how the business of the whole farm, or any part of it, stands. The Stock-bridge system is further desirable as having stood the test of actual experience on a large number of farms of various kinds. Excerpt from Farm Accounts: A Manual for Farmers and Those Desiring a Simple Method of Keeping Accounts Ever since the latter part of the fifteenth century, when the Venetian traders, the greatest merchants of their time, evolved a system of double entry book keeping, the subject of accounting has grown in breadth and importance until to-day no business of any extent is successfully carried on without the aid of a perfect system of accounting. Even the small trader in the country village recognizes its importance, while the farmer has hardly begun to appreciate the benefits that may be derived from a thorough understanding of his transactions gained only by a system of accounts. Most of the efforts to adapt or improve the various methods of keeping accounts have been along lines employed by the great business concerns in our large cities. The tendency of the modern book keeping development has been to reduce the labor of the dealer who employs clerks and special book keepers to look after the details of his business. With the soil replete with the food for vegetable life, there seemed to he little necessity for careful husbandry; hut as successive years of tillage depleted the earth of its richness the need for more knowledge of farming became apparent. With this depletion came man's determination to know more of nature and with the progress of civilization he has had better opportunities for advancing. He is learning that business success depends upon the ability to act at the proper time; that this ability is only acquired by gaining a complete insight into every detail of his affairs. He must, therefore, keep accounts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from How to Keep Farm Accounts: A Practical Book for the Practical Farmer A great deal has been said about the need of a simple system of accounts for the Farmstead-something possible on the average farm every day of the year-one relieved of useless detail, and still show its earnings and expenses-it's owner's assets and liabilities. Taking the conditions which govern actual work on the farm into consideration, nothing specific has yet been published for the practical farmer, and it is for him this book has been written. It is elementary because many have had no opportunity to study bookkeeping, therefore the man who knows nothing about it has been kept in sight from cover to cover. The illustration given is introduced to show the application of the fundamental principles of accounting to the every-day routine of general farming. No special sets for stock, dairy or fruit farms is thought necessary because the principles of accounts are unchangeable and only vary in their application. All the farmer, dairyman, fruit-grower or stockman really needs to fully understand the principles when no trouble will be experienced in arranging a system of accounts to suit his wants, which will vary ta certain extent on every farm and with each individual. Bookkeeping is simply a matter of record and to do it correctly only requires that the principles of debit and credit be understood. It is necessary on many farms and useful on all. The question ought not to be, shall I keep some simple set of books, but what form is the most practical? If this book will help you, its object will have been fulfilled.
