"In 1806, the Reformed Presbytery of Scotland, the Covenanters, were desirous of giving an account among themselves and to the world for, what seemed to many, their peculiar emphasis on testimony bearing. ... This work was designed to explain the background for the Judicial Testimony of 1761, which explained the Covenanters differences from the Seceders. ... One small tract and another short article, written by David Steele, on the matter of testimony bearing are included. In the tract, Steele takes up the nature of testimony bearing and the desirability that it be progressive without surrendering reformation attainments. He calls attention to the decline of the several Reformed Presbyterian bodies in America, Scotland and Ireland, prior to the middle of the century. Testimony bearing does not consist in stating principles but in making applications. In his article, written for the "London Scottish Reformed Presbyterian" magazine, Steele discusses the relative demerits of the so-called American "Testimony," of 1806, when compared to the Judicial Testimony of 1761."--From publisher description.
