Excerpt from A Selection From the Collection of Drawings by the Old Masters The present series of Plates was prepared to illustrate a complete Catalogue of the Collection of which they form a part, but the labour of preparing for the press a descriptive Catalogue of between two and three thousand drawings, according to the number that might be considered desirable to finally retain, induced the owner to, at least temporarily, abandon his intention. Not only was the labour itself sufficiently great, but it is doubtful if such a catalogue, however carefully compiled, could be of much use, seeing that 'without reproductions it is impossible for the student to judge if the name bestowed, whether by a former owner or the present, is justified. Altogether about 150 diherent Artists are represented here by 292 plates, giving a fair idea of a portion at least of the Collection. The drawings selected have been chosen for various reasons, not always for their intrinsic value, but occasionally as examples of masters not often met with. Some are interesting as studies for known pictures, others for their signatures, contemporary attributions, or for having been engraved, a few for their rarity: Cellini's authentic drawings can be counted on one's fingers. The drawing by Gerard Hoet proves that the accepted date of his birth must be wrong, as he would have been a boy of twelve at the date of this drawing; as to Thopas the dictionaries I happen to possess are altogether silent! Excerpt from J. Pierpont Morgan Collection of Drawings by the Old Masters Formed by C. Fairfax Murray, Vol. 3: Two Hundred and Forty-Seven Plates Selected From Examples of the English, French, German, Flemish and Dutch Schools The Collection was commenced in Italy, but the greater part of the drawings were purchased in England during the last thirty years, notably from the Palmerston, Aylesford, Warwick, Holford, Robinson, and Knowles Cabinets, and other sources too numerous to mention. One or two small but important Collections were purchased entire, the Tighe volume being the best of these. Excerpt from Selected Drawings From Old Masters in the University Galleries and in the Library at Christ Church, Oxford, Vol. 2 Bitter experience of his own might well be supposed, from the word Intollerabile written along the upper margin of the sheet, to have prompted Leonardo thus to illustrate the old motto, Virtutis comes Invidia. But it is on the whole more likely that the sketch belongs to the same cycle as the preceding two, and was done to order as an illustration of the view which Ludovico i] More took of those whom he chose to regard as his enviers and detractors. The frost of intellectual pedantry blights the invention, and but for the text which explains the designs we might imagine that Envy, wounded by the palms and Iaurels of Virtue, was the victim and not the assailant. The actual drawing, nevertheless, is touched with the unfailing fire and magic of Leonardo's hand, and the stealthy amble of Death on four feet is as grim a piece of macabre imagination as can be found. Excerpt from Selected Drawings From Old Masters in the University Galleries and in the Library at Christ Church Oxford, Vol. 3 This study, hitherto unpublished and until two years ago quite unknown belongs to a small group or Florentine drawings to which the distinguished name of Verrocchio can wrth reasonable confidence be attached. To the student it is therefore an example of great impoitance, in spite of its unfortunate condition. It has at an early date been much worn and rubbed, no doubt by studio use. The outlines of the features and of the folds of hair and drapery have been pricked or 'pounced' for transfer, indicating that the drawing was actually used as the cartoon for a picture; a process which has somewhat disguised their original delicacy. In some places, moreover, as in the left eyelid and nostril and the lips and chin, these outlines have been corrected and reinforced with the pen, apparently before the pouncing and perhaps by the original draughtsman himself. Later, and this is the worst, the flesh parts, especially the cheek, throat, and shoulder, have been minutely and mechanically stippled over by the brush of some 'restorer' ignomnt of form and drawing, in a warm grey tone imperfectly harmonizing with that of the chalk. The parts which remain uninjured are nearly the whole of the hair, veil, and dress so far as it is shown, with some few portions of the more delicate modellings of the forehead, nose, cheek, and temple. Excerpt from The Old Masters, Vol. 1: One Hundred Examples of Their Work Chosen From European Galleries and Reproduced in Colour With Notes on the Pictures HE object of these volumes is, so far as may be possible, to bring some of the I great pictures of the world into our houses that we may have them always with us. That even the best photographs fail to do this is obvious; for while they serve well enough as reminders and give indeed the outline of the picture accurately enough, all the colour and atmosphere is lost, in the sombre brown or grey monotone into which some wonder full of sunshine has passed. Here at least something of that glory of colour has been kept with a really wonderful success, as in the marvellous triptych of Perugino or the Corryfeld of Constable. And whilst it remains impossible to reproduce an exact replica of any picture, it may safely be said that, so far as human ingenuity at present goes, the reproductions of the Old Masters here shown will be found to be as near the originals as it is possible to bring them. The whole series of a hundred pictures comprises a careful selection from the Picture Galleries of the world and from the work of all schools of Painting. Each volume contains fifty works, twenty of which are from paintings in the National Gallery, whilst others are from works at Rome, Florence, Paris, St Petersburg, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Vienna. We may add that every effort has been made to do the fullest justice possible to the Old Masters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
