Excerpt from A Royal Pastoral, and Other Poems Invocation. Come, beardless Leader of the Sacred Nine, Unshorn Apollo, from thy heavenly hill, Once more to earth thine influence incline, And burning thoughts into my mind instil. Without thy kindly aid my voice must still Raise scarce an echo the low vales among, And like the purling of a puny rill That hardly glads the mead it creeps along, Without effect or force must flow my nameless song. Resume again thy long forsaken seat, Take up the sceptre thou wast wont to sway, Touch my young lip with accents pure and sweet, And grant me strength stern virtue to obey: Turn not thine ear from my request away, Vouchsafe me power to tune the Lyre Divine, To calm the passions cheer, the weary way, To pay to love the tributary line, To leave a name on earth when I its cares resign. Poetry. Rachelle Toarmino's debut collection of poems is "The Glass Essay" for the Tinder generation, a fiery and playful exploration of the tropes, stereotypes, and all-too-real experiences that come with being an ex. While the title suggests a meditation on leaving and being left--on absence, even on woundedness--there are no ghosts in this book. Instead, the reader finds Britney Spears and other archetypal exes and troubled lovers, from Carmela Soprano and Lorde to Anne Carson and Molly Bloom. They don't haunt the rooms of these poems: they party in them, fill them with their laughter, rage, and tender longing. Unbroken and big-hearted, they sing together of magic and pain, of old fights and new gambles, of getting over a breakup and getting over yourself.

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Renaissance pastoral poetry is gaining new interest for its distinctive imaginative vein, its varied allusive content, and the theoretical implications of the genre. This is by far the biggest ever anthology of English Renaissance pastoral poetry, with 277 pieces spanning two centuries. Spenser, Sidney, Jonson and Drayton are amply represented alongside their many contemporaries. There is a wide range of pastoral lyrics, weightier allusive pieces, and translations from classical and vernacular pastoral poetry; also, more unusually, pastoral ballads and poems set in all kinds of prose works. Each piece has been freshly edited from the original sources, with full apparatus and commentary. This book will be complemented by a second volume, to be published in 2017, which includes a book-length introduction, textual notes and analytic indices.
