A Rich and Rewarding Journey is a wonderful book that provides an inspired picture of the life and times of Ridgway L. Ridgway, beginning with the settlement on the Texas High Plains by his ancestors in the early 1900s and including a vivid description of the rugged setting (where earlier the buffalo roamed) that spawned the author. No doubt, those early times shaped his high level of commitment to excellence, his ability to focus on specific goals, and his determination to succeed. Ridgway’s research accomplishments and his efforts to promote a broad understanding of agriculture as the most basic human endeavor and to increase scientific knowledge, while working primarily in Texas and Washington, DC area, are particularly noteworthy. Following his formal education at Texas Tech University and Cornell University, he became a leading entomologist with a primary focus on managing cotton insects. His story provides an excellent picture of the biological control and pest management strategies. Included are actions over the past half century, with the battle against cotton insects that ultimately made a major contribution to the highly effective Boll Weevil Eradication Program. A common theme throughout the book, and indeed, throughout Ridgway’s life, is a strong commitment to the sustainability of food and fiber production systems throughout the world. Finally, he gives valuable insights into the legacy of Charles Valentine Riley. Riley’s life and work were a major inspiration to him, and he worked tirelessly for the past thirty years to carry forward Riley’s vision to benefit all of humankind. That vision is reflected in the quote by Riley in 1872, “None but the well informed are successful...for success in agriculture...today, implies knowledge - scientific knowledge.” Ridgway, as the current President of the Charles Valentine Riley Memorial Foundation, was responsible for developing a collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the World Food Prize Foundation that has lifted efforts to build on Riley’s legacy to new heights.

Queer critique, queer practice: embodied teachings for healing from trauma and social injustice. Jacoby Ballard provides an empowering and affirming guide to embodied healing through yoga and the dharma, grounded in the brilliance, resilience, and lived experiences of queer folks. Part I deconstructs the ways mainstream yoga perpetuates queer- and transphobia and other systemic oppressions, exploring the intersections of yoga, capitalism, cultural appropriation, and sexual violence. Ballard also addresses the trauma--complex, vicarious, historical, and collective--perpetuated against queer communities. In response, he offers tools for self-compassion, tonglen, lovingkindness, and grounding, and helps readers explore questions like: What is trauma? How is it a product of injustice--and how can healing it create justice? The world won't stop being homo- and transphobic, so how do I encounter that in a way that does the least harm? How do we love what is uniquely trans about us? What are affinity groups, and why do we need them? In part II, Ballard offers a queer-centered, fully embodied, and equity-rooted practice with meditations, practices, and sequences for processing and healing from trauma individually and in community. He explains concepts like lovingkindness, letting go, compassion, joy, forgiveness, and equanimity through a queer lens, and pairs each with corresponding meditations, practices, and beautiful line drawings of queer bodies. Enhanced with stories from Ballard's personal practice and professional experience teaching yoga in schools, prisons, conferences, and his weekly Queer and Trans Yoga class, A Queer Dharma is a guidebook, reclamation, and unapologetically queer heart offering for true healing and transformation.

In recent years, the study of textiles and culture has become a dynamic field of scholarship, reflecting new global, material and technological possibilities. This is the first handbook of specially commissioned essays to provide a guide to the major strands of critical work around textiles past and present and to draw upon the work of artists and designers as well as researchers in textiles studies. The handbook offers an authoritative and wide-ranging guide to the topics, issues, and questions that are central to the study of textiles today: it examines how material practices reflect cross-cultural influences; it explores textiles' relationships to history, memory, place, and social and technological change; and considers their influence on fashion and design, sustainable production, craft, architecture, curation and contemporary textile art practice. This illustrated volume will be essential reading for students and scholars involved in research on textiles and related subjects such as dress, costume and fashion, feminism and gender, art and design, and cultural history.
