Saint Andrew, Scotland's patron saint, was reputedly crucified at Patras on a cross of X shape, now the well-known white cross on blue of the Saltire flag. However, the association of the saint with the X-shaped cross is not a feature in the early cult of Saint Andrew and does not appear in any of the apocryphal material describing his martyrdom. Using both literary and iconographical evidence, Ursula Hall attempts to determine when, where and how this development in the popular tradition and in the depiction of Saint Andrew's death might have taken place. In a clear, captivating style, Hall examines various written accounts of St Andrew's life and death, along with an analysis of the traditions and procedures of crucifixion at the time. Pictorial representations of Saint Andrew, in mediums such as embroidery, seals, paintings, sculptures and glass work are abundant compared to literary evidence about his tradition. Hall examines a variety of these works to uncover the development of iconography and legends surrounding Saint Andrew in Europe, England and Scotland. Through these studies, and in conjunction with an analysis of the functions and context of the X-shaped cross in Christian tradition, she offers fascinating explanations for the association between the distinctive cross and Scotland's patron saint.

Basic Real and Abstract Analysis focuses on the processes, methodologies, and approaches involved in the process of abstraction of mathematical problems. The book first offers information on orientation and sets and spaces, including equivalent and infinite sets, metric spaces, cardinals, distance and relative properties, real numbers, and absolute value and inequalities. The text then takes a look at sequences and series and measure and integration. Topics include rings and additivity, Lebesgue integration, outer measures and measurability, extended real number system, sequences in metric spaces, and series of real numbers. The publication ponders on measure theory, continuity, derivatives, and Stieltjes integrals. Discussions focus on integrators of bounded variation, Lebesgue integral relations, exponents and logarithms, bounded variation, mean values, trigonometry, and Fourier series. The manuscript is a valuable reference for mathematicians and researchers interested in the process of abstraction of mathematical equations.

The cross is one of Christianity’s most distinctive symbols, increasingly cutting across Catholic/Protestant and other denominational divides. Although the US acknowledges no official religion, a variety of both Christian and non-Christian denominations have flourished. Crosses dot the landscape, sometimes towering over it and at other times simply marking a grave or the site of a traffic accident, or providing a place for contemplation. Courts continue to decide whether it is better to remove long-standing crosses on public property to protect the separation of church and state, or whether removing such symbols might be misinterpreted as expressing hostility towards religion. Whether marking identity, triumph, love, grief, or sacrifice, the cross remains important in American life and continues to be the subject of works of art, music, literature, and political, religious, and social rhetoric, all of which this volume addresses in an accessible A-to-Z format.
