Excerpt from A Prince of Dreamers The fiction which resembles truth is better than the truth which is dissevered from the imagination, said the Persian poet Nizami, in the year 12 50. It remains true, however, to-day. SO I give no excuse for this book. It is not one which will appeal to the man in the street. Nevertheless I make the attempt to give the character and the times of the Prince of Dreamers with a glad heart. It is as well that the twentieth century of the West should know something of the sixteenth century in the East. SO many of my dramatis persona once lived in the flesh and spoke many of the words imputed to them in the following pages, that it will be shorter to designate those who are purely imaginary puppets. Excerpt from The Dreamers: A Play in Three Acts There is fact in this play and there is fancy, and only the student of those dreaming days will know where the one merges with the other. He is scarcely likely to approve of this attempt to recapture the emotion of an historical episode by means that are very often unhistorical; to his trained mind any study of Robert Emmet's insurrection which ignores Owen Kirwan, Anne Devlin and many another is unworthy of serious consideration. But selection and rejection of incidents and characters is the beginning and end of all playmaking; even in plays dealing with imaginary people there must always remain the country on the dark side of the moon unknown to the audience but as vivid to the playwright as the side that shines on the stage, how much more crowded must that dark side be in an historical play when into a few acts must be crushed the emotions and actions of hundreds of people during several months? That is the only defence I can offer to his just criticism on the omissions in the play. He will also, probably, quarrel with the title of the play and say that Robert Emmet was practical in all his qualities, a soldier, a tactician, a most able organiser. I agree. But all these things were fused together for one purpose by the most practical quality of all - his dream. Dreams are the only permanent things in life, the only heritage that can be hoarded or spent and yet handed down intact from generation to generation. Robert Emmet's dream came down to him through - how many? - generations. He passed it on undimmed. It is being dreamed to-day, as vivid as ever and - they say - as unpractical. Excerpt from Seven Dreamers And they've got what they want, too, in them dreams, and if they waked up - in this world, lmean - they wouldn't have it. There's everything in the Bible, ain't they? I'm for ever a-quotin' from it, as you know. Folks laugh at me about it, but somehow there's al lers somethin' there that expresses my mean in' better'n I could put it into talk myself. I'm readin' it in course, now, and only the other day l come to a place in Isaiah where it treats 0' this, and it says, 'a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awak eth, and his soul is empty: a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint.' Excerpt from A Prince of Georgia and Other Tales Dreams, did I call her amusements? Then both women were dreamers, because Miss Ethel was a poor girl floated above the trials of her posi tion by her fond hopes, for she knew that her aunt liked her better than any relative she had, and she aspired to become her heir. And now she was about to cross Europe and penetrate Asia - she who until a month before had never been twenty miles from Cincinnati, and in that city learned no more of the world than one gets from membership of a Baptist sewing circle, a progressive euchre club, and a course of the talk-about novels of each year.
