Excerpt from A Primer of Browning There are few works in our literature which so well repay careful and loving study as the poems of Robert Browning. To know Browning well is to have acquired a liberal education. The British public have taken a long time in finding this out, but it is now recognized that his claims cannot be neglected by those who would think high thoughts and commune with noble souls. It has been the fashion to call the poet obscure, analytical and introspective, and this by those who have never taken the pains to learn really what he is. The truth is, he frequently deals with subjects that in their nature are profound; but though he treats obscure matters deeply, it is not true to say that he deals with deep subjects obscurely. As a poet he is very varied. He has written many exquisite love poems, some charming lyrics, many dramatic monologues, and has told the story of a crowd of half-forgotten persons more or less important in their time and way. The aim of this Primer is to indicate briefly the subjects treated in the different poems, and to indicate in plain language their main outlines. Excerpt from A Browning Primer: Being a Companion to the Pocket-Volume of Selections From the Poetical Works of Robert Browning Robert browning was born at Camberwell, May 7th, 1812. The mixed nationality of which he comes forms an important and interesting clue to the broadness of his ideas and sympathies. His father's mother was a Creole of St. Kitts; his mother's mother a Scotchwoman. She married a scotch-german mariner, William Wiedermann, and of this marriage was born the poet's mother, Sarianna Wiedermann. His father, also Robert Brown ing, was a clerk in the Bank of England, but the occupa tion was an uncongenial one, and be determined that his son should follow the bent of his inclinations, whitherso ever they might lead him. A loveless and unhappy childhood had pre-disposed the elder Browning towards making his children's lives as happy as possible. An Introduction to the Study of Browning by Arthur Symons The following list of the published writings of Robert Browning, in the order of their publication, has been compiled mainly from Dr. Furnivall's very complete and serviceable Browning Bibliography, contained in the first part of the Browning Society's Papers (pp. 21-71). Volumes of "Selections" are not noticed in this list: there have been many in England, some in Germany, and in the Tauchnitz Collection, and a large number in America, where an edition of the complete works was first published, in seven volumes, by Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Co., Boston. 1. PAULINE: a Fragment of a Confession. London: Saunders and Otley, Conduit Street. 1833, pp. 71. 2. PARACELSUS. By Robert Browning. London. Published by Effingham Wilson, Royal Exchange. MDCCCXXXV., pp. xi., 216. 3. Five Poems contributed to The Monthly Repository (edited by W.J. Fox), 1834-6; all signed "Z."-I. Sonnet ("Eyes, calm beside thee, Lady, couldst thou know!"), Vol. VIII., New Series, 1834, p. 712. Not reprinted. II. The King-(Vol. IX., New Series, pp. 707-8). Reprinted, with six fresh lines, and revised throughout, in Pippa Passes (1841), where it is Pippa's song in Part III.-III., IV. Porphyria and Johannes Agricola. (Vol. X., pp. 43-6.) Reprinted in Dramatic Lyrics (1842) under the title of Madhouse Cells.-V. Lines. (Vol. X., pp. 270-1.) Reprinted, revised, in Dramatis Personæ (1864) as the first six stanzas of § VI. of James Lee. 4. STRAFFORD: an Historical Tragedy. By Robert Browning, Author of "Paracelsus." London: Printed for Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, Paternoster Row. 1837, pp. vi., 131. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Browning I have ever held that the rod with which popular fancy invests criticism is properly the rod of divination: a hazel switch for the discovery of buried treasure, not a birch - twig for the castigation of offenders. It has therefore been my aim in the following pages to direct attention to the best, not to forage for the worst - the small faults which acquire prominence only by isolationflof the poet with whose writings I am concerned. I wish also to give information, more or less detailed, about each of Mr. Browning's works; information sufficient to the purpose I have in view, which is to induce those who have hitherto deprived themselves of a stimulating pleasure to deprive themselves of it no longer. Further, my aim is in no sense controversial. In a book whose sole purpose is to serve as an introduction to the study of a single one of our contemporary poets, I have consciously and carefully refrained from instituting com parisons - which I deprecate as, to say the least, unnecessary - between the poet in question and any of the other eminent poets in whose time we have the honour of living. Excerpt from Browning Studies These Browning Studies were given in Oberlin College, in the Department of English in the course on Nineteenth Century Poetry, in the second semester of the year 1908-09, and were repeated in the corresponding semester of the year1909-10. They constituted a course in the Summer Session of Middlebury College in 1913, and were given here again as a part of the study of Nineteenth Century Poetry in the second semester of the year 1913-14. It should be explained also that the greater part of the study of The Ring and the Book was written before those Oberlin days, and that since those days Bishop Blougram's Apology, A Death in the Desert, and Reverie have been added to the list of poems taken up; also that, besides being used in connection with the college classes mentioned above, several of the lectures have been given in various places. The interest taken by the students in these studies has suggested their publication. They are now printed as given in the classroom, with some revision. Abbreviations are written out more than in the author's notes, but no attempt has been made to reproduce the extemporaneous elaboration and explanation given in the classroom. Lectures which occupied several classroom hours are here sometimes combined into a single chapter. These studies do not pretend to be exhaustive. They are simply an introduction to some of Browning's best work. They are intended now, as they were in the classroom, for those who have not read Browning at all before, or very little.
