Besides steam boats in North America, there are now boats propelled by means of cattle, which they call horse boats, or team boats. The proprietors use the latter term as having, as they suppose, a more attractive sound. These boats are propelled by the animals (from 8 to 13 horses or mules in each boat) drawing a gin, which, by wheel-work, communicates motion to paddle-wheels (similar to those of steam boats) in the middle of a double vessel.
