A Practical Guide to Understanding the NMR of Polymers presents an introduction to the theory and practice of NMR, and includes sections on the fundamental principles of NMR and the applications to polymers. This book will help readers understand how these methods can be used to determine the chemical structure of polymers that influences the macroscopic properties. Solid state NMR methods are introduced to enable the readers to measure the structure of polymers on longer length scales. It is also shown how NMR is used to measure the molecular dynamics that can be related to the mechanical properties of polymers.

R.N.IBBETT This book provides a source of information on all major aspects of NMR spectroscopy of synthetic polymers. It represents a deliberate attempt to pull together the numerous strands of the subject in a single comprehensive volume, designed to be readable at every scientific level. It is intended that the book will be of use to the vast majority of polymer scientists and NMR spec troscopists alike. Readers new to NMR will find extensive information within the book on the available techniques, allowing full exploration of the many polymer science applications. Readers already established within a branch of NMR will find the book an excellent guide to the practical study of polymers and the inter pretation of experimental data. Readers who have specialised in polymer NMR will find the book a valuable dictionary of proven methodologies, as well as a guide to the very latest developments in the subject. Workers from all of the main branches of polymer NMR have been invited to contribute. Each chapter therefore contains information relating to a parti cular investigative topic, indentified mainly on the basis of technique. The book is loosely divided between solution and solid-state domains, although the numerous interconnections confirm that these two domains are parts of the same continuum. Basic principles are explained within each chapter, combined with discussions of experimental theory and applications. Examples of polymer investigations are covered generously and in many chapters there are discussions of the most recent theoretical and experimental developments.

In the time since this book was written, the application of NMR in the study of polymers has continued to develop rapidly. The main trends of the work have remained as before, namely, the study of the structure of polymers, molecular motion in them, and chemical conversions of high-molecular-weight substances. How ever, as a result of the refinement of experimental techniques and development of the theory, new progress has been achieved, par ticularly in the NMR spectroscopy of polymer solutions. We therefore decided that it was worthwhile to provide an ad ditionallist of literature, covering papers published in 1965, 1966, and the beginning of 1967. By using the bibliographic directory appended to the list, the reader can readily find references to the latest literature for all sections of the book. I. Ya. Slonim A. N. Lyubimov v Preface to the Russian Edition The aim of this book is mainly to answer the questions which inevitably arise for a chemist who wishes to use NMR in his work on polymers.

The chapters in this collection are from papers which were presented at a symposium on solid-state NMR of polymers. A two-part program on available NMR techniques applicable to solid polymer analysis was presented at the 3rd Chemical Congress of North American held in Toronto, Ontario, June 5-10,1988. The program was sponsored by the Division of Polymer Chemistry with support provided by the Division, its Industrial Sponsors, and the Donors of the Petroleum Research Fund administered by the American Chemical Society. Co-organizers included Professor Colin Fyfe of the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), Professor Hans Spiess of the Max Planck Institut fur Polymerforschung (Mainz, West Germany), and myself. The full-day tutorial, which was free to registered attendees, covered the range of topics. The purpose of the tutorial was to provide a basic introduction to the field so that newcomers to its present and future applications could develop sufficient understanding to learn effectively from the subsequent symposium. The first talk attempted to give listeners a feel for the way a novice spectroscopist can learn to use the various NMR techniques to explore his own areas of interest. Simple experiments can provide unique information about solid polymers that can be useful in interpreting synthetic results and in relating solid-state conformation, morphology and molecular motion to physical properties.

Polymer Sequence Determination: Carbon-13 NMR Method covers the principles, practice, and application of 13C NMR to polymer structure determination. This book is divided into six chapters that highlight spectral interpretations, applications, and experimental considerations. Chapter 1 examines the polymer structure, with special emphasis on those structural features delineated by 13C NMR, along with the assignment techniques used during 13C NMR interpretations of polymer spectra. Chapters 2 and 3 present the methods for measuring sequence distributions and number-average sequence lengths for configurational sequences in vinyl homopolymers and for the comonomer distribution in copolymers and terpolymers. Chapter 4 discusses the statistical approaches to polymer characterization, while Chapter 5 contains practical experimental considerations when designing an NMR experiment to obtain quantitative structural information. Chapter 6 reviews 13C NMR studies for various vinyl homopolymers and copolymers. This book will be of great value to polymer scientists, NMR spectroscopists, and researchers.
