Return to the beloved Whitehorse, Montana series from New York Times bestselling author B.J. Daniels in these four classic cowboy tales of romantic suspense! SECRET OF DEADMAN’S COULEE When Sheriff Carter Jackson gets the call, he embarks on an all-out search for the woman who once shared his bed—and whose memory still torments him. Finding Eve alive only intensifies his yearning. But her shocking discovery in the Missouri badlands soon thrusts her into greater peril. Eve came home to Montana to unearth her family’s secrets. The dead body she found aboard a decades-old downed plane could be a vital clue. Except someone wants to keep the truth buried. Her best hope is the sensual lawman whose betrayal she can’t forgive…even as reigniting passion tempts her to trust him one last time. THE NEW DEPUTY IN TOWN Deputy Sheriff Nick Rogers moved to Whitehorse to keep a low profile, and falling for Laney Cavanaugh isn’t a good way to stay low...or stay alive. But avoiding Laney proves impossible when Nick lands his first case—a bridal shower murder, with Laney’s sister and cousin among the suspects. Laney is determined to clear her relatives’ names, and that means sticking close to Nick—too close for her own good. Because trouble has a way of hunting Nick down, and unless he can keep her safe, his trouble will find Laney first. THE MYSTERY MAN OF WHITEHORSE Whitehorse has never seen a man like Bridger Duvall before. As much as the rugged stranger keeps to himself, he’s sure got the whole town talking. Laci Cavanaugh thinks she might unravel the town’s biggest mystery by working for him. But business quickly becomes personal when a murder divides the town. As Christmas closed in, can Bridger and Laci find common ground before the killer strikes again? CLASSIFIED CHRISTMAS Cade Jackson is as country as a cowboy can get, until reporter Andi Blake arrives to civilize him and shatter his peaceful Christmas with shocking news. But Cade has a macho reputation to uphold, even if he is a sucker for a sassy brunette in stilettos. Andi, secretly burning for revenge, is set on exposing Cade’s bank-robbing family and the truth about their greatest heist. No one is going to stop her—not even smoldering, sexy Cade Jackson. And though Andi didn’t come to town looking for a cowboy, now that she’s rustled up one, can she corral him under the mistletoe?

A reprint--on acidic paper, alas--of the Swallow Press edition of 1963. We note with chagrin that the verso of the title page states . . printed on acid-free paper production people specify alkaline paper and are ignored by the printers (such was the case with an earlier OUP book--a new printing house seems in order). "Ghosts Towns of the West is the essential guidebook to the glory days of the Old West! Ghost Towns of the West blazes a trail through the dusty crossroads and mossy cemeteries of the American West, including one-time boomtowns in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The book reveals the little-known stories of long-dead soldiers, American Indians, settlers, farmers, and miners. This essential guidebook to the historic remains of centuries' past includes maps, town histories, color and historical photographs, and detailed directions to these out-of-the-way outdoor museums of the West. Plan your road trips by chapter--each section covers a geographic area and town entries are arranged by location to make this the most user-friendly book on ghost towns west of the Mississippi. Ghost towns are within a short drive of major cities out West, and they make excellent day trip excursions. If you happen to be in or near Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, or El Paso, for example, you ought to veer towards the nearest ghost town. Western ghost towns can also easily be visited during jaunts to national parks, including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, Glacier, Yellowstone, and many others throughout the West. Ghost Towns of the West is a comprehensive guide to former boomtowns of the American West, covering ghost towns in eleven states from Washington to New Mexico, and from California to Montana. This book has everything you need to learn about, visit, and explore a modern remnant of how life used to be on the Western range"--

A history and legal analysis of vigilantism in Montana in the 1860s, from a state Supreme Court justice and legal historian. Historians and novelists alike have described the vigilantism that took root in the gold-mining communities of Montana in the mid-1860s, but Mark C. Dillon is the first to examine the subject through the prism of American legal history, considering the state of criminal justice and law enforcement in the western territories and also trial procedures, gubernatorial politics, legislative enactments, and constitutional rights. Using newspaper articles, diaries, letters, biographies, invoices, and books that speak to the compelling history of Montana’s vigilantism in the 1860s, Dillon examines the conduct of the vigilantes in the context of the due process norms of the time. He implicates the influence of lawyers and judges who, like their non-lawyer counterparts, shaped history during the rush to earn fortunes in gold. Dillon’s perspective as a state Supreme Court justice and legal historian uniquely illuminates the intersection of territorial politics, constitutional issues, corrupt law enforcement, and the basic need of citizenry for social order. This readable and well-directed analysis of the social and legal context that contributed to the rise of Montana vigilante groups will be of interest to scholars and general readers interested in Western history, law, and criminal justice for years to come. “[Justice Dillon’s] book reads like a Western. Dillon masterfully sets the stage for the rise of the Montana vigilantes by bringing alive the people who created and lived in [mining] towns. There are heroes, villains, shady characters, and more than a few politicians, businessmen, lawyers and judges. What sets Dillon’s book apart from historical texts and fictional tales is that he provides legal analyses and explanations of the trials, sentences, due process and procedures of the day . . . And shed[s] grisly light on the details of the hangings. Dillon’s unique background as an attorney and judge and his downright dogged research are what makes this complex story so engaging. The prose is clear, crisp and gets to the point. . . . The book is satisfying because it answers contemporary nagging questions about the law regarding the vigilantes and the hangings.” —Gregory Zenon, Brooklyn Barrister “Dillon’s analysis of the vigilantes of Bannack, Alder Gulch, and Helena in Montana Territory is the most detailed, insightful, and legally nuanced yet produced. . . . This book is a model for historians to follow when dealing with 19th-century criminal proceedings. Establishing historical context includes examining the laws in books as well as the law in action.” —Gordon Morris Bakken, Great Plains Research
