William Francis White (1829-1891?) and his young wife sailed from New York in 1849 round the Horn to San Francisco, where he set up an import business. He later represented Santa Cruz in the state constitutional convention and served as a bank commissioner. A picture of pioneer times in California (1881), written under the pseudonym "William Grey," presents White's revisionist version of California history challenging the picture presented in the 1854 Annals of San Francisco. In particular, he attacks the Annals' discussion of the Mission Fathers and the Mission Indians, the United States conquest of California in the Mexican War, discovery of gold at Sutter's Fort, and the role of women during the Gold Rush. He also reminisces about his voyage to California and experiences as a San Francisco merchant, 1849-1850, as well as legends of the gold mines. The volume concludes with three fictional tales of California in the Gold Rush.

This is a comprehensive look at the Irish in Northern California from 1835 to 1900. Filled with anecdotes and insider history - this book is a unique piece of California history. The title, Forgotten Pioneers, embodies only half a truth in its application to the subject --- those early settlers in the wilderness of California, men of Irish birth or ancestry who contributed lavishly toward laying the foundations of a new commonwealth on the Pacific. It is the purpose of this book to reinstate in the rank where they belong, some, at least, of these overlooked men "whose character and achievement entitle them to the highest place in the respect and esteem of the people."

By the age of 90, when he wrote this memoir, Charles Peters had lived an extraordinary life. Born in the Azores, an immigrant to America at 10, he caught the Gold Fever in 1849 and headed to California. He spent the rest of his long life there, prospecting for gold and ranching. As you'll see in his book, he became something of an encyclopedia on California mining. He packed this book full of wonderful tales as well as a great many fun facts about gold, mining, and the luck of the Chinese. If it hadn't been for an accidental drowning at 96, he may well have made it to a much greater age. He had the genes for it.Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the movement that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
