Franz Anton Hoffmeister's Viola Concerto in D Major (written prior to 1799) has become among the standard repertoire of viola concertos, due to the rise of viola virtuosos since the beginning of the twentieth century and the rarity of virtuosic viola concertos with stylistic forms from the Classical period. This piece has been included in several major orchestra auditions and competitions. While violists often lack hands-on experiences of the Classical repertoire, this document is to provide violists ways to perform this piece and pieces from the same period. Hoffmeister's Viola Concerto in D Major has been published by G. Henle Verlag, Kunzelmann, Peters, Kalmus, International Music Company (New York), H.L. Grahl, and Max Eschig. Kunzelmann is in full score and piano reduction, and the other six are in piano reduction. Seven cadenzas have been published, five of them were written by Franz Beyer, Herbert Blendinger, Maurice Vieux, Robert D. Levin, and Paul Doktor. Each of them presents different technical difficulties. These editions will be discussed and compared. The form of each movement will also be analyzed. Issues of performance practice will be provided along with the information above. I will examine Leopold Mozart's A Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing, published at Ausburg in 1756, because this treatise not only deals with the techniques of violin playing, but also provides guidance on playing of ornamentations, which is informative for Hoffmeister's Viola Concerto in D Major.

The viola concerto Xian Shi is an outstanding concerto composed by Chinese-American composer Chen Yi. Chen Yi enrolled as a student at the Central Conservatory of China where she began her composition studies. Graduation in 1983, Chen Yi composed this viola concerto as her first major work as well as her graduation composition. In the same year, Liu Lizhou premiered the concerto with the China Film Orchestra under the direction of Guan-rong Yao. . Though relatively unknown in the United States for many years, the Viola Concerto "Xian Shi" has recently become a focus in both America and on the worldwide stage. The new interest in "Xian Shi" has positioned the concerto to become part of the major repertoire for viola. The concerto uses elements of ethnic Chinese music in a Western music form; This DMA project begins with an exploration of the historical background of Chen Yi's life and this influence on this viola concerto. The second section is provides an analysis of this concerto's form, general harmonic elements, and the use of traditional Chinese music elements (e.g., the musical notation, instrumental techniques needed for performance, and musical expressions within the composition itself). With explanations of specific Chinese elements used in this composition, insights from the interviews with the composer, and the first recorded performance of this work with piano and percussion, this document will provide violists outside of China with more resources to successfully study and perform this concerto.

When Bela Bartók died in September of 1945, he left a partially completed viola concerto commissioned by the virtuoso violist William Primrose. Yet, while no definitive version of the work exists, this concerto has become arguably the most-performed viola concerto in the world. The story of how the concerto came to be, from its commissioning by Primrose to its first performance to the several completions that are performed today is told here in Bartók's Viola Concerto:The Remarkable Story of His Swansong. After Bartók's death, his family asked the composer's friend Tibor Serly to look over the sketches of the concerto and to prepare it for publication. While a draft was ready, it took Serly years to assemble the sketches into a complete piece. In 1949, Primrose finally unveiled it, at a premiere performance with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. For almost half a century, the Serly version enjoyed great popularity among the viola community, even while it faced charges of inauthenticity. In the 1990s, several revisions appeared and, in 1995, the composer's son, Peter Bartók, released a revision, opening the way or an intensified debate on the authenticity of the multiple versions. This debate continues as violists and Bartók scholars seek the definitive version of this final work of Hungary's greatest composer. Bartók's Viola Concerto tells the story of the genesis and completion of Bartók's viola concerto, its reception over the second half of the twentieth century, its revisions, and future possibilities.
