Whether the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians is a single document or a compilation of two or more, and the question of Paul's relations with the Corinthian church between the despatch of the First and the composition of the Second letter (or letters), have been matters of debate since the eighteenth century.Margaret Thrall's commentary engages with these and all the other issues associated with 2 Corinthians. There follows a detailed verse-by-verse exegesis of chapters 1-7, which attempts to understand the viewpoint of the original readers of the text as well as Paul's own. This volume covers many of Paul's writings which have evoked considerable scholarly interest in recent years. This is an exemplary addition to the ICC series.

The book deals with the relationship of religion, ideology, violence and peace. The authors discuss these topics and related phenomena-such as religious (in)tolerance, religious pluralism, political terror and post-secular culture from different aspects (education, marriage, culture of memory, business ethics)-in different concrete societal contexts, including Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Taiwan, and more. Against this background of different academic disciplines, philosophy, theology, science of religion, sociology, intellectual history, psychology, science of education and legal science, this book offers an integral and inter-disciplinary insight into the nature, origins, function and connections of religion, ideology, violence, and peace. Holmes examines four exegetical devices employed by all sides in the debate on 1 Tim. 2.9-15, proposing that together they create a 'whirlwind' effect which obscures the text's meaning. She concludes that (1) the immediate context is general, not ecclesial; (2) background often reconstructed from passages elsewhere in the Pastorals is misleading; (3) comparison with 1 Cor. 14.34-35 can similarly mislead; and (4) the conjunction gar ('for') has been allowed unduly to dominate interpretation. The writer of the letter, it is argued, has been misunderstood since very early in the Christian era, his intention having been simply to moderate women's everyday behaviour in ways that parallel the behaviour he requires of men.
