TRB Special Report 244 - Highway Research: Current Programs and Future Directions describes the United States' highway industry and the major highway research and technology (R&T) programs. It then introduces a new framework for classifying highway R&T activities, maps the 1993 expenditures of the major public-sector programs on this framework, and presents suggestions and recommendations for the highway R&T program that reflect the Transportation Research Board's Research and Technology Coordinating Committee's vision of the needs of the highway transportation system for the next century.

Prepared by the Environmental Technology Evaluation Center (EvTEC), a CERF Service Center. This report describes the nature and scope of an environmental evaluation of ThermoEnergy Corporation's Ammonia Recovery Process (ARP) System, a method for recycling ammonia in wastewater. The data in this report were collected over a three-month pilot study.ØTests found that the ARP system is capable of removing 75?99% of the ammonia in the waste stream in a domestic wastewater treatment plant. The ARP System uses a series of absorption, evaporation, and crystallization steps to convert ammonia in wastewater into a commercial fertilizer, ammonium sulfate. The evaluation results clearly indicate that the ARP process is capable of achieving significant ammonia reduction under a range of environmental conditions

The topic of streets and street design is of compelling interest today as public officials, developers, and community activists seek to reshape urban patterns to achieve more sustainable forms of growth and development. Streets and the Shaping of Towns and Cities traces ideas about street design and layout back to the early industrial era in London suburbs and then on through their institutionalization in housing and transportation planning in the United States. It critiques the situation we are in and suggests some ways out that are less rigidly controlled, more flexible, and responsive to local conditions. Originally published in 1997, this edition includes a new introduction that addresses topics of current interest including revised standards from the Institute of Transportation Engineers; changes in city plans and development standards following New Urbanist, Smart Growth, and sustainability principles; traffic calming; and ecologically oriented street design.

The National Road is a comprehensive history of the first federally financed interstate highway, an approximately 600-mile span that joined Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois in the nineteenth century. This book covers the road's contribution to the cultural, economic, and administrative history of the United States, its decline during the second half of the nineteenth century, and its revival in the twentieth century in the form of U.S. Route 40. The story of the National Road embraces an account of its building, its constitutional significance, the unique culture that it represented, the movements and trends that transpired across its route, and the symbolic value that it held, and continues to hold, for the American people. Beyond its status as an American heritage symbol, it serves as a forceful reminder that the United States must continue to pursue the goal of sustainable national investment that began with the National Road and comparable projects during the early republic.
