Now in its fifth edition, A Mathematics Sampler presents mathematics as both science and art, focusing on the historical role of mathematics in our culture. It uses selected topics from modern mathematics--including computers, perfect numbers, and four-dimensional geometry--to exemplify the distinctive features of mathematics as an intellectual endeavor, a problem-solving tool, and a way of thinking about the rapidly changing world in which we live. A Mathematics Sampler also includes unique LINK sections throughout the book, each of which connects mathematical concepts with areas of interest throughout the humanities. The original course on which this text is based was cited as an innovative approach to liberal arts mathematics in Lynne Cheney's report, "50 HOURS: A Core Curriculum for College Students", published by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

"Do you want your children to enjoy learning math? Teach them how to play! In excerpts from author Denise Gaskins's most popular books, the Let's Play Math Sampler features ten kid-tested games covering math concepts from counting to prealgebra. Math games meet children each at their own level. The child who sits at the head of the class can solidify skills. The child who lags behind grade level can build fluency and gain confidence. And both will learn something even more important — that hard mental effort can be fun. So pick up a copy of the Let's Play Math Sampler today and make math a playful family adventure."

Presents assessment tasks that are appropriate for use with students from age 4 to age 8. The book provides teachers of primary grades mathematics with examples of assessment tasks that reflect the various ways assessments can be used prior to, during and following mathematics instruction. Teachers can then consider the potential of these tasks to uncover the mathematical understandings of their students for the purpose of planning further instruction.

Particle samplers are widely used in workplaces in order to determine the concentration of airborne particles in the atmosphere. They generally operate by drawing air, with the aid of a pump, through one or more orifices in the sampler body and housed within the sampler is a filter through which the air is subsequently drawn. The airborne particles are collected on the filter and their concentration is determined. Various samplers have been designed for this purpose including "static" samplers, which are located in a fixed position in a working environment and determine the dust concentration averaged over a prescribed period of time at that one point, and "personal" samplers which are mounted on a working person near to the breathing zone. The ORB sampler, a static sampler designed by Ogden and Birkett (1978) to have approximately the same entry efficiency, for particles with aerodynamical diameter up to at least 25~m, as a human head equally exposed to all wind directions for wind speeds between 0 and 2. 75m1s, is shown in Fig. l. l and examples of personal samplers are shown in Fig. 1. 2a, b and c and represent a single 4mm hole sampler, a seven hole sampler and a 25mm open face filter holder respectively. These three samplers are some of the most commonly used personal samplers for sampling the total airborne concentrations of workplace dusts in Britain.

This collection of sample assessment items contains items compiled from many sources, including state and provincial assessments, sorted into the strands of number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement and data analysis and probability. Because students are assessed on standardised tests with multiple-choice items, the writing team chose samples of such items as well as explanations for those problems designed to give students opportunities to demonstrate their skills and understanding. “Teacher notes” to suggest ideas for making multiple-choice items more meaningful and a variety of rubrics, are also included. In addition, the professional development chapter is designed to help in-service and preservice teachers understand and use levels of complexity for particular problems, use and adapt multiple-choice items, use assessment tasks as an in-service topic, employ scoring rubrics, use technology in assessment and design their own assessment items.
