Excerpt from A List of British Birds Those species which the Committee does not regard as positively authenticated as British are distinguished by having their names printed in italics and included in square brackets. But it has been deemed advisable to regard as British every species of which even a single specimen has been obtained in an undoubtedly wild state within the confines of the British Islands. The present list enumerates 452 species, of which 76 are included in square brackets, leaving 376 species as the ascertained number of British birds. Excerpt from British Birds: Key List This attempt at a "Key List" of British Birds is not intended for scientific ornithologists, but for those who have only a slight knowledge of birds, so as to enable them to determine a species without having to search through bulky volumes. Of course, such a list must be, to a great extent (as all Natural History works are), a compilation; but the writer has examined and compared specimens of all the species. Every endeavour has been made to avoid technical and scientific terms and to be as concise as possible. American land-birds included in "British" lists have been omitted; others might with propriety be struck out - such as specimens escaped from captivity, or included without sufficient inquiry as to their authenticity. With slight modifications, the nomenclature and arrangement of the 'Ibis' List have been followed. Measurements of length are given, but only as an attempt to show the proportionate size of a species. In the writer's opinion measurements are not of much service, especially as hardly any two persons measure a bird in the same manner. Unless otherwise stated, the sexes are alike in plumage, and the remarks refer to adults in summer plumage. A species is called "resident" when it is found in the country throughout the year, but there is no doubt that even among residents there is a partial migration. Excerpt from Sketch-Book of British Birds Of these four hundred and forty-five species, there are doubtless several that have no real claim to be considered British at all. The evidence of the capture of many of the specimens is not convincing, and many species are included in the British Avil'auna on untrustworthy data. They have been, however, on the British list [or so many years that any attempt to shake the authenticity of their occurrence by a single author may be resented. Excerpt from A Hand-List of British Birds: With an Account of the Distribution of Each Species in the British Isles and Abroad In drawing up this account of the distribution of each species in the British Isles we have had in view the necessity of giving such details as will indicate to the student whether a bird is worthy of special record on account of its general rarity, its scarcity in any particular part of the country, or at some particular season of the year, or because of the want of previous observations. For these and other such reasons it has been necessary to treat some species much more fully than others. The distribution abroad has been given in more general terms, but here again a species of wide range does not require so much detail as one of more restricted or unequal distribution. Moreover our knowledge of the distribution of some species is much more complete than that of others. The notes on migration refer chiefly to passage-movements or are given in cases where the known migrations of a species are too complicated to be treated in the distributional accounts. Excerpt from A Concise Handbook of British Birds Although the urgent need for compression has prohibited the author from presenting this work as a complete natural history of British Birds, yet he believes that as a handy textbook for reference it has had as yet no rivals. It has been brought up to date as far as possible, every species on the British list having been included, and nearly all described, while the records Of the rarer species have been carefully collected, and in the case Of the common species a tolerably complete life-history has been given. The numbering Of the genera and species will also probably prove Of service. The length Of a bird is (unless otherwise stated) measured from the base Of bill to tip Of tail, all measure ments being in inches and hundredth-parts. The description first given is (unless expressly mentioned) that Of a bird in breeding plumage, 'but the seasonal changes, if appreciable, are added. The habitat may be taken as meaning the region inhabited during the breeding season, but the winter range Of migratory species has usually been added. If brackets enclose a describer's name they indicate that the generic name adopted is not that used by the describer. Excerpt from History of British Birds, Vol. 3 of 4 This Fourth Edition of Yarrell's 'History of British Birds' was commenced by Professor Newton in 1871, and continued by him until May 1882, during which time the account of the Accipitres, Passeres, and Picari was completed. In June 1882 I undertook to finish the work - not willingly or with a light heart, but after considerable pressure and at much personal sacrifice. There were various difficulties which could be foreseen, and not the least among them was the conviction that my portion of the work must necessarily appear at a disadvantage when compared with the high standard of excellence attained by my predecessor. There was, moreover, a stipulation for the completion of the work by June 1885; and, allowing for a pre-arranged and necessary absence of six months from England, this left only two and a half years for writing the history of nearly 200 species. The accomplishment of the task within the allotted term may be allowed to extenuate some slips of the pen which are corrected in the Errata. The Second and Third Editions were little more than reprints with additions, of the First, which appeared just forty-two years ago.
