Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools This edition is issued to meet the increasing demand for the Grammar, which is springing up in all parts of this country. It is substantially the translation of the Rev. Mr. Woods; but in the revision of the translation, great freedom has been used, especially in making such verbal changes as seemed to promote perspicuity and help the learner to an instant understanding of the author's mean ing. A translator who is not perfectly familiar with both the languages with which he has to do, is in danger of occasionally transferring a word from his dictionary to his page, without first submitting it to the scrutiny of his own thoughts; and where infelicities of expression arise from such a cause, they are more likely to catch the eye of a stranger than of the translator himself. Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools This book is in the main an abridgment for school purposes of my larger Latin Grammar, but the abridgment is very unequal, some parts being reproduced with slight omissions, some parts being largely reduced, and others again being rewritten. Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii, of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book 11. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly I 32, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. Excerpt from The Public School Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools, Colleges, and Private Students As I am now, by the kindness of those whom I was bound to consult, authorised to attach my name to this Pre face, I think it right to notice the chief objections made to the books on Latin Grammar with which I have been occupied. When the Primer was published. Seven years ago, it was right that it should be criticised, and certain that it would be impugned nor could we expect that all criticism would be equally candid and intelligent, or that every assailant would choose his weapons from the armories of truth and reason only. Excerpt from Grammar of the Latin Language: For the Use of Schools and Colleges Prof. Stoddard, I trust I shall be pardoned in commending it once more to the kind indulgence of the teachers of this counh'y, and in expressing the hope that, in its present form, it will be deemed not altogether unworthy of a continuance of the favor which it has so long received. I cannot indeed ven ture to indulge the hope, that all the imperfections of the work have even now been removed, or that, in my attempts to render it more perfect, I may not sometimes have fallen into new errors; but this I can truly say, that since its first publication I have devoted much time to its revision, and have sought to manifest my sense of the kindness with which it has been received, by doing all in my power to render it less unworthy of public favor. The evan lists are thus made their own best inte retare; and it is shown how won erfully they are sup lementury to each 0 or in minute as well as in important articulars, an in this way is brought out fully and clear] the fundamenta characteristics of their testimony, unity in diversity.
