“A Journey with Dyslexia” is an educational descriptive Essay of 16680 words about Peter (77) and his experiences in overcoming dyslexia. Peter started exploring dyslexia when he was diagnosed at age 23. He has taught himself to read and write and now feels he has the knowledge to help dyslexic sufferers and school teachers. His educational handbook describes procedures for creating neural pathways that could enable sufferers to learn to read and write. Peter experienced frustration, discrimination, lack of confidence, and poor self-esteem. He overcame all the trials. With sixty years of personal experience, Peter now understands what happened to him and continues to progress. In his early childhood, he had many negative experiences that caused extreme stress. He started to realise that he was not stupid and that he might even be intelligent. Through determination, he looked for clues that linked every part of his life and formed a complete picture of his dyslexic experience. He used this to compile evidence of his experience with dyslexia and its many traits. However, with the techniques that helped him, he helped others develop neural pathways. At fifty-five, after purchasing a computer, he wrote a story, fulfilling a lifelong wish. After writing it he found he could read novels, understand the story, its twists and turns, and remember the plot. To date, he has written six unpublished fantasy novels. At sixty-seven, He was diagnosed as autistic and needed to reassess his dyslexic journey in the light of this diagnosis. In his seventies, Peter understood his journey had come full circle. He had beneficial knowledge to share with teachers, students, and parents. He used the strategies he developed for himself to help others.

Development of Dyslexia and Other SpLDs is the fourth book in the series Living Confidently with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs). This book is about the persistence of dyslexia and specific learning difficulties (SpLD) into adulthood. It pulls together experiences of many dyslexic/SpLD people. The book is written with non-linear readers in mind: those who need to move about a book picking up ideas that are currently relevant to them; a style that suits many dyslexic/SpLD readers. The book gives a framework for understanding the wide-ranging experiences of dyslexic/SpLD adults. With the greater understanding, there should be better help for: • adults who still have no strategies for dealing with dyslexic/ SpLD problems • children who have some skills but not at the level of their overall intelligence • young children who show the first signs of difficulties • dyslexic/SpLD children in mainstream schools. A new paradigm is proposed whereby all teaching programmes utilise each learner’s learning strengths - catering for dyslexic and SpLD adults and children involves vital teaching and learning approaches that are good practice for all.

This innovative book looks at the keys for success in dyslexic adults, comparing both those who are successful and less successful, enabling parents and teachers to use these keys to best support young dyslexics. These keys look at home life, school, career choices, working relationships, coping strategies, traits, unique selling points, and what is considered success for somebody with dyslexia. The Successful Dyslexic questions if school-based trauma can be used positively, as both successful and unsuccessful dyslexic adults share the same traumatic school experiences. It is how these adult dyslexics have used this trauma, positively or negatively that has set them on the path for success, or to struggle as adults searching for a worthwhile career. The theories of ‘disability paradox’ and ‘post-traumatic growth’ are used to understand why despite having a disability, many dyslexics can be, and are, highly successful. This book details an interview study of 27 successful and 10 less successful dyslexics, with 2 expert interviews, and supported by two large online studies. In total this book includes the contribution of 191 adult dyslexics. Each in-depth interview has sought to understand the individual’s journey from childhood to adulthood, and their quotes are used to enlighten the reader to each of their individual experiences. Armed with these insights, it is hoped that parents and teachers of young dyslexics can set them on the path to unlock their own future success.
