Excerpt from A History of the Teaching of Chemistry in the Secondary Schools of the United States Previous to 1850 No less authority than Foster Watson is sponsor for the state ment that the history of the study of Latin is the history of secondary education well into the nineteenth century. We have long known in a general way, at least, the factors which delayed the introduction of the natural sciences, but we have been sadly lacking in information as to when and how the natural sciences began their invasion of the curriculum. Mr. Powers has made a valuable contribution not only to the history of the teaching of chemistry, but to the general history of education. He has presented in a clear and interesting manner the many factors which brought chemistry into the foreground of social and intellect'ual interests and finally secured for it a place in the schools. In addition to the valuable data which his painstaking efforts have brought together, he has made clear the sequence of forces which are universally at work in bringing about changes in school curricula, - namely, new social and industrial needs; quests for new knowledge to meet these needs; rise of a new science (in this case, chemistry); efforts to gain for the new science a place in the schools; establishment of a new study; sub sequent formalism and devitalization; efforts to rehumanize or revitalize the now thoroughly established and thoroughly re spectable study, by teaching it in close relation to such concrete problems as originally led to its introduction. From this sum mary statement it is evident that Mr. Powers' study, though treating only one school subject and that for a comparatively brief period, will provide students of the history of education and students of secondary education not only with an explanation of many conditions and factors in the present educational situation, but also with the basis of an illuminating chapter in educational and social philosophy. Are your beginning students sometimes overwhelmed by the prospect of reading research articles or writing a research proposal? Does the notion of educational research make them anxious to begin with? Is research a mystery to them? This text will help. Educational Research: An Integrative Introduction is a brief, basic, paperback alternative to the typically long, weighty, hardcover educational research tome. It takes a practical approach to educational research for beginning students. Students who study its chapters critically learn to read research reports and to produce a proposal for their own research project. Nine complete research reports in Appendix A provide illustrations of major ideas in the text chapters and are used in the end-of-chapter exercises. The reports read include experimental, descriptive, qualitative, and historical approaches. The book presents qualitative and quantitative research as complementary approaches to educational research.

The Science Education of American Girls provides a comparative analysis of the science education of adolescent boys and girls, and analyzes the evolution of girls' scientific interests from the antebellum era through the twentieth century. Kim Tolley expands the understanding of the structural and cultural obstacles that emerged to transform what, in the early nineteenth century, was regarded as a "girl's subject." As the form and content of pre-college science education developed, Tolley argues, direct competition between the sexes increased. Subsequently, the cultural construction of science as a male subject limited access and opportunity for girls.

An American Scientist on the Research Frontier is the first scholarly study of the nineteenth-century American scientist Edward Williams Morley. In part, it is the long-overdue story of a man who lent his name to the Michelson and Morley Ether-Drift Experiment, and who conclusively established the atomic weight of oxygen. It is also the untold story of science in provincial America: what Hamerla presents as science on the "American research frontier". This important examination of Morley’s struggle for personal and professional legitimacy extends and transforms our understanding of science during a foundational period, and leads to a number of unique conclusions that are vital to the literature and historiography of science. By revealing important aspects of the scientific culture of the American heartland, An American Scientist on the Research Frontier deepens our understanding of an individual scientist and of American science more broadly. In so doing, Hamerla changes the way we approach and understand the creation of scientific knowledge, scientific communities, and the history of science itself.
