Excerpt from A History of Egypt Under the Pharaohs, Vol. 1 of 2: Derived Entirely From the Monuments The necessity for a new English Edition of the History of Egypt under the Pharaohs has pleased the German Author as much as it has filled him with gratitude towards the reading public in England. Far from believing that he could claim for his book the merit of having solved, even approximately, the endless difficulties of a continuous exhibition of the history of the ancient land of the Pharaohs, he regrets to be obliged to confess that his work is only an attempt to piece together the loose and crumbling stones of a building, which the ever-wasting tooth of time and the destroying hand of man have swept off the face of the earth almost to its foundations while a kind fortune has preserved but few remains of it to the present day. Such an attempt must therefore appear alike bold and of doubtful success; and a great responsibility has been laid upon the Author, whose zeal and efforts have been impeded on all sides in the search for the articulate witnesses of historical antiquity. Excerpt from Ancient Egypt Under the Pharaohs, Vol. 1 of 2 Egyptian archaeology and history have undergone a complete revolution since the commencement of the present century, and especially since the discovery of the hieroglyphical character. Hitherto, however, no work has appeared in our language from which the historical student can obtain a comprehensive view of the results of the combined labours of travellers and artists, interpreters and critics, during the whole of this period. The object of my work is to supply this deficiency. It describes, according to the present state of our knowledge, the land and the people of Egypt, their arts and sciences, their civil institutions, and their religious faith and usages; and relates their history from the earliest records of the monarchy to its final absorption in the empire of Alexander. The History of Egypt now offered to the English reader is distinguished in two respects from the long train of able and interesting works, which, in opening to the last and the present generations the life and story of the Old Egyptians, as by a new revelation, have at the same time thrown a clear and vivid light on many portions of Holy Scripture. The work is as unique in the competence of its Author as in the originality of its design. After all that has been done since the time when Young and Champollion discovered the key to the vast treasures of contemporary records which till then were a sealed book, it still remained for some competent scholar to undertake the Herculean task of weaving the testimony of the Egyptian records into a consecutive history of the long line of Pharaonic Dynasties, derived solely from these ancient and authentic sources^ and free of all colouring and intermixture from the traditions given at second-hand by the classic writers, which find their proper place elsewhere. No second-hand knowledge of the monuments and papyri, however learned or extensive, can be a sufficient qualification for the full and accurate rendering of their testimony. Nothing can suffice, short of that kind of scholarly instinct which is the first of a life-long study and comprehensive knowledge of the whole subject matter, based on a personal examination of the original records. These are the qualifications acquired and matured in the mind of Dr. Henry Brugsch-Bey, during his long residence in Egypt and his travels through the length and breadth of the land, with the express object of studying the monuments; qualifications which are shared alone by his friend and colleague, M. Mariette-Bey.

This illustrated two-volume history of Egypt, 'derived entirely from the monuments', was first published in an English translation in 1879. Brugsch brings to bear his wide experience of the archaeological sites together with his linguistic expertise, and deliberately eschews later Greek and Roman accounts of Egypt.
