Excerpt from Historic Sketch of the Reformed Church in North Carolina Welker's account of Early German Reformed Settlers in North Carolina, Vol. VIII, p. 727, Colonial Records of North Carolina should introduce this work. Rev. Dr. Welker did more than all other men had done to rescue from oblivion the existence, piety and heroism of a people most worthy to live in the minds of com ing generations. It is also equally appropriate that the book be dedicated to the pioneer preachers and laymen, to whose faith, zeal and constancy we are indebted for the founding and perpetuation in this wilderness of the New World, those altars on which has been kept burning the fire of the Reformation for one hundred and fifty years. -the editors. Excerpt from Saint Paul's Chestnut Hill, Salisbury, North Carolina: An Historical Sketch Father Murdoch came to St. Luke's as a young and spirited missionary, prepared to improve the congregation which had little money and was only slowly beginning to recover from the difficult Reconstruction Period. He surely brought new life and progress to St. Luke's. During the first five years of his ministry the congregation more than doubled. He possessed all the necessary qualities to be a zealous missionary. He was a brilliant scholar and had great interest in the classics as well as mathematics and architecture. In recognition of his schol arly abilities he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by the University of The South at Sewanee, Tennessee in 1890. He was a very capable theologian and was devoted to the historic Christian duty of expanding the Church and spreading the Gospel. Excerpt from Historical Sketch of First Baptist Church Morganton, North Carolina and Personal Reminiscences 1879-1956 Maud Elizabeth Patton was born in Caldwell County, North Carolina, at The Globe on April 25, 1884. She was the third of six children born to the Rev. Robert Logan and Mar garet Spainhour Patton. Religion and education were always foremost in her life. Devo tion to these fundamental values was instilled during her formative years, particularly by her father, who was both teacher and Baptist minister. Between 1888 and 1901, he served four periods as pastor of Morganton First Baptist Church. From her earliest memories, a living Christian faith and the church were a dominant force in her personal life and remained so throughout her days. Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Geneva Presbyterian Church, Granville County, North Carolina, 1833-1933 At this Geneva camp meeting in 1833 there were eight minis ters, besides the regular pastor, Rev. Alexander Wilson. They were A. D. Montgomery, D. L. Russell, Samuel Paisley, S. L. Graham, D. A. Pinick, A. L. Watts, N. H. Harding, and Edward Hollister, coming probably from all the Presbyterian churches in this part of the state. I know little of their history. Samuel Paisley's father was wounded at the battle of Guilford Court House. His mother was captured by the Indians when she was a child. They killed both her parents and adopted her in their tribe. Later when her foster parents were without food in the white man's country they sold her for some bread and rum.
