Excerpt from A Half Century of Minnesota as Territory and State: A Concise Account of the Principal Events in the Period of Discovery, Exploration, and Settlement, and During the Half Century of Territorial and State Government Minnesota. Nine of these years were passed under the territorial administration and forty -one in statehood, but the distinction matters little. In 1849 Minnesota assumed her name and her position among the geographical and political divisions of the United States. In 1849 Minnesota became an entity. Since that time she. Has had a distinct place in this great country; for fifty years her history has been making and her character and position developing. And that half century of Minnesota history is well worth preserva tion. It is worth the while of every person living in the state to be in formed as to the main facts in the story of Minnesota. For few if any of the states of the Union have made greater progress in the first fifty years of their organized existence. This progress has been not alone in increased population and material wealth; Minnesota has, in these five decades, looked well to the higher things of life. An educational system has been established which, while not yet perfect, is recognized as ad mirable in plan and detail and quite wonderful for a state which a half century ago was largely inhabited by Indians. At the head of this sys tem is the University of Minnesota, which is now recognized as ranking among the best institutions of its kind in the country. Supplementing the educational system is a group of excellent libraries which under the stimulating influence of sympathetic legislation and enthusiastic pro motion will, it is believed. Increase rapidly in the immediate future. Not less significant has been the progress of the religious life of the state. The leading denominations have found a fertile field among a people whose antecedents and traditions make church affiliations and loyalties most natural. It is noteworthy that in several of the foremost denomina tions in Minnesota there are individual churches which compare favor ably in membership, charities and general efficiency with any in the country. Excerpt from Minnesota Brief Sketches of Its History, Resources and Opportunities If the hills and valleys of our state could answer to our questioning; if the sighing of its pine forests were a language; if its thousands of limpid lakes, flashing back the brightness of the sun, could reflect the scenes that have been mirrored in them; if its boundless prairies could repeat the story of their transformation from the roaming-ground of herds of bison into waving seas of grain; if the rich mines of iron ore at the north could tell of the persistent prospecting and the enterprise in railway building that unlocked their wealth; if we could hear such voices from the past, we should be thrilled with the romantic narrative of Minnesota, and our hearts would be deeply stirred with sympathy for the hardships and persevering courage of its people, and with admiration for their achievements. Previous to the settlement of this area by white immigration, which may be said to have begun in 1849, when the Territory of Minnesota was organized, there were nearly two hundred years of gradually increasing knowledge of the geography of this state. During the first century, its explorers were French, chiefly led to this distant region for the profits of the fur trade. In the first half of the second century, after the British conquest of Canada, the explorers were English-speaking traders and travelers; and in its latter half, expeditions sent by the United States government to acquire information of the unsettled parts of the Northwest Territory and of the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase. The entire history to be here briefly sketched is thus divisible into three parts: 1. The period of French exploration in Minnesota, from 1655 to 1763, the date of the cession of Canada to the English; 2. The period of English colonial and United States exploration, from 1763 to 1849; 3. The period of Minnesota's territorial and state development, from 1849 to 1904. The three periods together span two and a half centuries. About a third of this state, lying east of the Mississippi and of a line drawn to the north from its head at Lake Itasca, belonged to the Northwest Territory, for which Congress enacted the Ordinance of 1787. The other two-thirds were acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase, negotiated with the government of France under Napoleon, April 30, 1803. It has been a little over fifty years since the organization of the Territory of Minnesota, which at its birth was a very small and unimportant creation, but which in its half century of growth has expanded into one of the most brilliant and promising stars upon the union of our flag; so that its history must cover every subject, moral, physical and social, that enters into the composition of a first-class progressive Western state, which presents a pretty extensive field; but there is also to be considered a period anterior to civilization, which may be called the aboriginal and legendary era, which abounds with interesting matter, and to the general reader is much more attractive than the prosy subjects of agriculture, finance and commerce.

Having lived in the state through nearly the whole period of Minnesota's political existence, and having taken part in most of the leading events in her history, both savage and civilized, I propose to treat the various subjects that compose her history in a narrative and colloquial manner that may not rise to the dignity of history, but which, I think, while giving facts, will not detract from the interest or pleasure of the reader. If I should in the course of my narrative so far forget myself as to indulge in a joke, or relate an illustrative anecdote, the reader must put up with it. Nature has been lavishly generous with Minnesota,--more so, perhaps, than with any state in the Union. Its surface is beautifully diversified between rolling prairies and immense forests of valuable timber. Rivers and lakes abound, and the soil is marvelous in its productive fertility. Its climate, taken the year round, surpasses in all attractive features that of any part of the North American continent. There are more enjoyable days in the three hundred and sixty-five that compose the year than in any other country I have ever visited or resided in, and that embraces a good part of the world's surface. The salubrity of Minnesota is phenomenal. There are absolutely no diseases indigenous to the state. The universally accepted truth of this fact is found in a saying, which used to be general among the old settlers, "that there is no excuse for anyone dying in Minnesota, and that only two men ever did die there, one of whom was hanged for killing the other." The resources of Minnesota principally consist of the products of the farm, the mine, the dairy, the quarry and the forest, and its industries of a vast variety of manufactures of all kinds and characters, both great and small, the leading ones being flour and lumber; to which, of course, must be added the enormous carrying trade which grows out of, and is necessary to the successful conduct of such resources and industries,--all of which subjects will be treated of in their appropriate places.
