Excerpt from A Grammar of the Spanish Language, Vol. 1 of 2: With Practical Exercises We shall first consider words as sounds, show the letters that form them, and succinctly give the rules most proper to fix their pronunciation. Considering them afterwards as signs of our thoughts, we shall examine their nature, and their accidental variations, the order they observe between themselves, and the rules of their union. Most grammarians treat separately upon the rules of syntax. It has appeared to us more methodical, precise and simple, to place these rules in the chapters relating to each kind of words. From this it follows, however, that the examples we give for the understanding of the rules sometimes precede the knowledge, which 1 ey suppose of certain parts of speech. But those examples are always accompanied by the translation which greatly diminishes a slight inconvenience, which a second reading of the grammar will remove, and which is abundantly compensa ted by the advantage of avoiding frequent repetitions and references, a multiplicity of which fatigues and discourages beginners. (abridged and revised) This reference grammar offers intermediate and advanced students a reason ably comprehensive guide to the morphology and syntax of educated speech and plain prose in Spain and Latin America at the end of the twentieth century. Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.

Excerpt from Practical Spanish, Vol. 1: A Grammar of the Spanish Language With Exercises, Materials for Conversation and Vocabularies This Grammar has been written for the traveller and the business man as well as for the student. The subject and the mode of treatment are equally adapted for any of these three classes. The scheme of the book is as follows:- Part L begins with the Alphabet and concludes with the Pronouns. Part II. begins with tho Verb and closes with the Interjections. Part I., as comprised in the present volume, treats first of the Alphabet and the Article, and then proceeds to give elementary rules for tho Gender of Nouns, and the formation of Feminines and Plurals. A complete discussion of the Article and of the Noun is postponed to the second volume. Having disposed of these preliminary matters, the Author proceeds to put Exercises before the student, in order to familiarise him quickly with a number of ordinary phrases and expressions. In this way the learner will make far more rapid progress than if his attention were confined to the mere acquisition of words. He is first taught how to use the few words which he has already learued, and so gradually and almost insensibly led to acquire others. Each Exercise is preceded by a Vocabulary containing the words to be employed in it. The subjects are such as naturally present themselves in daily life, and many points of difference bo-tween English and Spanish life are incidentally explained. The Vocabularies do not include Verbs.
