English in Kenya is a stable post-colonial variety that is used as an inter-ethnic lingua franca in private domains, is the medium of instruction as well as the language spoken in parliament and court rooms. Yet so far no comprehensive research monograph on Kenyan English has been published that surveys its characteristic linguistic features. The present book closes this gap by giving a full description of the characteristic linguistic features of Kenyan English. The book provides an in-depth overview of Kenyan English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and also gives a meticulous account of the diachronic evolution of this post-colonial variety.

Excerpt from English-Kikuyu Vocabulary: Compiled for the Use of the C. M.S. Missions in East Africa This Vocabulary of the Kikuyu language is spoken by one of the most numerous tribes in the British East African Protectorate. Although many Euro peans have from time to time either passed through the country or resided in it, nothing in the shape of a vocabulary of the language has so far appeared in print. The compiler therefore sends it forth with a certain amount of misgiving. Many mistakes will, no doubt, be found as this language is more fully known. Those, however, who know what it is to reduce a new language, and what it is to have to search for every word, and to get the same often from very unwilling and unintelligent natives, will not be too critical in this case. The collection was made in the district of Kikuyu, called by Europeans Fort Smith (native name, Kabati), during the years 1901 and 1902, when the writer was stationed in that locality by the Church Missionary Society.
