The Girl with Nine Lives is a true adventure story—a candid personal memoir describing the first eighteen years of the author’s life, which began in foster care until she was adopted by a hardworking couple of faith. The book explores the author’s experiences growing up on the farm; her struggles learning to walk, run, ride a bike, and the many scrapes (both figurative and literal!) she got into as a daredevil and a dreamer. Born with a serious balance issue, doctors said Stephanie (or Stacy, in the book) would never walk, and should be relegated to an institution. Being given up for adoption left her feeling discarded and insecure. As she is raised by a loving family, and begins to experience victories, the author learns to see her value in the world, eventually finding her calling as a teacher. Faith has a strong presence in the book; Stacy grows in her faith, and comes to realize that God has a plan for her. With a childhood so full of amusing, frightening, and unusual adventures and misadventures, it really does seem like a miracle that the author emerged in one piece. Readers will find themselves rooting for young Stacy’s success, and at times, her survival!

'It's Saturday and everything is different. No, I didn't go to the market this morning and I didn't have my usual coffee on Westerstraat. And no, I wasn't getting ready for a new semester at college. Next Monday, January 31st, I have to admit myself at the hospital for my first chemotherapy session. For the next two months, I'm expected each week for a fresh shot of vincristine, etoposide, ifosfamide and loads more exciting abracadabra.' Sophie is twenty-one when she is diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of cancer. A striking, fun-loving student, her world is reduced overnight to the sterile confines of a hospital. But within these walls Sophie discovers a whole new world of white coats, gossiping nurses, and sexy doctors; of shared rooms, hair loss, and eyebrow pencils. As wigs become a crucial part of Sophie's new life, she reclaims a sense of self-expression. Each of Sophie's nine wigs makes her feel stronger and gives her a distinct personality, and that is why each has its own name: Stella, Sue, Daisy, Blondie, Platina, Uma, Pam, Lydia, and Bebé. There's a bit of Sophie in all of them, and they reveal as much as they hide. Sophie is determined to be much more than a cancer patient. With refreshing candor and a keen eye for the absurd, Sophie van der Stap's The Girl With Nine Wigs makes you smile when you least expect it.

A funny and moving story woven with tapu and suspense, set in 1980s New Zealand, by bestselling author Stacy Gregg. They dug a hole right there on our farm on the bank of the Mangawara and they put the box filled with gold inside it and covered it with dirt. And to keep the gold safe until they could return one of them placed a tapu on it. A tapu so that anyone who tried to touch the gold before they could come back for it would die. Titch is determined to find the gold hidden somewhere on her family's farm. It might be tapu but that won't put her off. Her dad has gone bankrupt, and she has had to leave her home in the city and move back with her family to smalltown Ngāruawāhia, start a new school and find new friends. Could the hidden gold be the way to fix her family's money problems? Titch, her rowdy cousins and her new friend Tania set out to find the gold. But an unexpected encounter with a creature from the nearby river sees Titch learn about her Māori heritage, her own ancestor’s role in the brutal Tainui wars and the dangers of messing with tapu. A story about growing up in a time of social unrest in early 1980s New Zealand, Nine Girls is a page-turning adventure that shows what it's like to feel like an outsider in our own world.

Over the years of my life I have realized the aspects of my lifethe drug abuse, being molested, domestic violence, and rape. Each situation had to be addressed by me writing my thoughts. I started out as a diary and after a while, when it was healthy for my soul, by me writing my thoughts on what happened to me, on the things people did to me, and on how they treated me. My writing relieves some of the stress and pain. I look back on my life and as I write. I relive it over and over again. I recreated it all over the foibles of others as time went on, so I could forgive by telling my secrets and my story. Some of my most deeply hidden thoughts were pushed back to the back of my mind for years so that I could deal with it at a later time; I just went on living my life until I was able to deal with it years later. I was so ashamed to tell anyone. I was embarrassed. By writing every day, trying to work out my past events and in the conflicts, writing is a way to cleanse my soul. It is and can be an effective method of treatment emotionally and physically. Forgiving myself and others took a long time as far as the domestic violence in my life. I still live in fear every day not knowing if the man was or is ever caught. All the names have been changed to maintain their privacy. I pray my story may help and reach someone who may be in trouble and who needs to reach out. You dont have to be silent anymore. Find someone you can trust and tell them what is going on with you. There is help today.

Nine Girls, No Boys is a collection of true stories of a family in rural Virginia—Daddy, Mama and nine children. All girls. No boys. For young Black parents trying to rear a large family in the 40s, 50s and 60s, there were tough times with years of struggle. Stories are funny, sad, depressing as well as triumphant. Being sharecroppers, the family deals with sub-standard farmhouses and landowners who are difficult. Moves from one farm to another take place as the family continues to grow. Daddy and Mama yearn for a home of their own. When Daddy gets his first tractor he has farmed so long with mules he uses the same commands to try to stop the tractor. He has to learn that saying “whoa” doesn’t work with the tractor. The brake has to be applied instead. Choosing appropriate names for the girls becomes an ordeal. With the assistance of relatives and older ladies in the community, some of the names chosen cause much ridicule and anguish for the girls. Having one car to transport a family of eleven provides interesting episodes. A door that swings open when Daddy makes turns while driving the car endangers the family. Holes in the floorboard of the car are hazardous as well as convenient at times. The family has its share of emergencies. Daddy’s controlled burning gets out of control, and endangers the farm and the entire community. One child swallows an object and has to seek medical attention. Another is burned badly as her clothes catch fire while she tries to stay warm in the poorly heated farmhouse. Segregated two-room schools with long distances to walk impact the girls’ educational opportunities and school attendance. Having to help Daddy with farm chores also makes attending school difficult. Teenage years and dating provide interesting reading. Mama and Daddy try to ensure that their girls grow up to be respectful young ladies by trying to enforce unorthodox rules. Perseverance, determination and hard work are evident as the family’s journey unfolds and the fate of Daddy, Mama and the nine girls is revealed.

A twisted tale of heinous crimes and hidden motives by the legendary author of Double Indemnity. Graham meets Sonya outside of his real estate office. She is sixteen, beautiful, and drops a bombshell—she’s there because Graham’s half-brother, Burl, raped her, leaving her frightened, pregnant, and very much alone. All she wants is the $1,111 it will cost to hide out for the next few months in a convalescent home before she gives the baby up for adoption, but Burl won’t give her the money. Sonya’s vengeful father, meanwhile, wants far more from Burl—he is determined to make the scoundrel pay for harming his daughter. Graham offers Sonya a better choice: He’ll marry her so that she can get a legal abortion. The plan will save the family, and the business, from scandal. But Graham has no idea that, as he asks for Sonya’s hand, he will be risking much more than just local gossip . . . Praise for James M.
