This firefighter has the perfect gift for a single mom and her little girl—if they’ll take him. A holiday story from New York Times bestselling author Vivian Arend. All Bradley Ford wants this holiday season is a date or three with sweet Hanna Lane. He’s the new fire chief, recently returned to Heart Falls to help his father after an accident. And while he wasn’t expecting to find someone like Hanna so soon, Brad’s certain that Hanna—and her adorable daughter, Crissy—are perfect for him and his plans to settle down. Hanna’s been taking care of herself since she became a single mom at sixteen. The only pure, honest love she trusts is her little girl’s, but for the first time in eight years, her libido flares to life. Something about Brad draws her like a moth to a flame—which is always a bad idea for the moth. When a fire leaves Hanna and Crissy homeless, Brad offers them shelter at his family’s homestead. The Ring of Fire is Mada CAZALI’s third detective novel. It is preceded by Confessions with Seashells and Salty Water and Times, on the Run. This is what Mr Viorel Urmă says about Mada CAZALI’s writing: Mada CAZALI is the creator of a new literary genre: the thriller which blends mystery, fast-paced action and suspense with poetry and sensibility to forge an original detective story which reads in one breath. The central characters of the three-book series–Confessions with Seashells and Salty Water; Time on the Run; The Ring of Fire–are Inspector Danilov, who struggles with family problems (his wife has disappeared for several years), and Magdalena, a mysterious woman who is like a puzzle wrapped in an enigma. She unveils herself at the end of the third book of the series, “Cercul de Foc” (“The Ring of Fire“), which, like the first two, presents multiple characters painted against various backgrounds and situations. Although relatively short, at around 130 pages each, and of deceiving simplicity, the books are apparently easy to read but solving each mystery is no easy matter for the reader… until the last pages. A thriller enthusiast myself, I was taken aback by the poetry that imbues the series–uncustomary for this specific genre. Can detective stories blend poetical atmosphere and images with the “hard” (blood, murders, etc.) stuff? It’s a bet that Mada CAZALI has won for her readers. Viorel URMĂ

For many African Americans, getting a public sector job has historically been one of the few paths to the financial stability of the middle class, and in New York City, few such jobs were as sought-after as positions in the fire department (FDNY). For over a century, generations of Black New Yorkers have fought to gain access to and equal opportunity within the FDNY. Tracing this struggle for jobs and justice from 1898 to the present, David Goldberg details the ways each generation of firefighters confronted overt and institutionalized racism. An important chapter in the histories of both Black social movements and independent workplace organizing, this book demonstrates how Black firefighters in New York helped to create affirmative action from the "bottom up," while simultaneously revealing how white resistance to these efforts shaped white working-class conservatism and myths of American meritocracy. Full of colorful characters and rousing stories drawn from oral histories, discrimination suits, and the archives of the Vulcan Society (the fraternal society of Black firefighters in New York), this book sheds new light on the impact of Black firefighters in the fight for civil rights.
