The "one size fits all" approach to education does not serve students well. Each student comes to our classroom with an individual approach to learning. As educators, we must utilize our students' differences and help them through the learning process by differentiating our instruction. Because of these differences, and my desire to provide choices to my students, I was able to develop a fifth grade social studies curriculum that offers student choice in learning. This curriculum is based on Jay McTighe's Understanding by Design, and incorporates Gardner's multiple intelligences, Bloom's taxonomy, differentiation, motivation, and academic choice. The broad look at literature on effective teaching and providing students with choice led to the design of a fifth grade social studies curriculum that is both educationally sound and appropriate for student choice.
