This document is intended to describe technologies available, application needs, and operational requirements relating to the use of fiber optic sensing systems on aerospace platforms: aTo define standard terminology used in describing fiber optic sensing systems and their performance. bTo identify current interfaces used for fiber optic sensing systems. cTo define environmental, reliability, and maintainability capabilities of fiber optic sensing system components. dTo describe the fiber optic sensor and instrumentation technologies that forms the current state of the art. eTo describe current and future unmet needs of the aerospace industry for measurements using fiber optic sensors. The purpose of this document is to aid in sensor system selection for aerospace applications. It describes both generic and specific qualities of key fiber optic sensing technologies and the range of measurement tasks they are able to perform. This includes: A critical and comprehensive comparison between specific optical sensor technologies, currently available, and corresponding non-optical sensing methods. This will assist aircraft component and subsystem designers to assess their suitability and potential for specific applications. An appraisal of technology maturity levels and technology gaps. Guidelines on the use and application of classes of fiber optic sensors are given including: sensor and system compatibility (including fiber cable, connectors, interrogator, signal conditioning, network interface, and power requirements), compatibility with aircraft systems, standard forms of interrogation/interface, proposed methods of standardization, and qualification recommendations.

Since the technology has moved strongly into a number of different areas a textbook of this sort could be used by a wide variety of academic departments including physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering and bioengineering. To make the second edition as widely appealing as possible a series of significant upgrades were made. 1. The book is structured to support a variety of academic programs and it can also be used as a general reference by practicing engineers and scientists. 2. The introductory chapter has been revised to outline the new content of the second edition and provide a overview of the current status of fiber optic sensor technology. 3. A new, extensive chapter has been added covering fiber optic grating sensor technology and its application to aerospace, civil structures, oil and gas and power generating applications. 4. A second new chapter has been added on the emerging field of biomedical fiber optic sensors. This is one of the most rapidly growing fields of use for fiber optic sensors and with rising health costs and medical advances promises to be an important area for many years to come.

The need for both intrinsic and extrinsic fiber optic sensor technologies continues to grow. To meet the demands of this fast expanding applications-driven market, Fiber Optic Sensors, Second Edition presents both the latest advances in fiber optic sensor technology, such as the application of photonic crystal fibers to fiber optic gyroscopes, and recent application opportunities, including the use of fiber optic sensors as a minimally invasive medical treatment. The new edition of this seminal work highlights the development of fiber optic sensors, while providing an overview of current methods for the construction of high-speed and high-capacity fiber optic systems. Two new chapters cover topics such as femtosecond laser illumination inscription and the growing application sector of fiber optic chemical and biological sensors. Adding significant new material, the book continues to provide a progressive history of each sensor type as well as basic principles and fundamental building blocks for practical applications in the electrical aerospace, defense and manufacturing, smart structure, undersea surveillance, medical, and gas and oil industries.

ARP6366 defines a comprehensive and widely-accepted set of specification guidelines to be considered by those seeking to use or design fiber optic sensors for aerospace applications. Some of the most common applications for fiber optic sensing within aerospace include inertial guidance and navigation (gyros) and structural monitoring (temperature, strain, and vibration sensing). Common sensor infrastructure elements include: transmitting and receiving opto-electronics (e.g., sources and receivers); multiplexing and demultiplexing optics; optical cabling; and signal processing (both hardware and firmware/software). Use of fiber optic sensor systems in the aerospace industry is expected to grow as the benefits and unique sensing solutions are understood. Guidance is needed for writing fiber optic sensor specifications to supply a comprehensive and widely-accepted vocabulary, parameters, and practices for fiber optic sensors for aerospace applications. Adoption of fiber optic sensors on aerospace platforms will benefit from improved coordination between developers, specifiers, program managers, and end users.
