Excerpt from A Concise Treatise on Mortgages, Pledges, and Liens Since the First Edition of this Work on Mortgages was published in 1897, there have been a very great number of cases decided on this branch of the Law. In the present issue these decisions (including those of the Irish Courts) reported up to the beginning of August, 1911, have been incorporated. In addition, the various Statutes passed since 1897 which touch upon the Law of Mortgage have been duly considered and commented upon. The clear and concise method of treatment adopted by the Author in the First Edition has been closely followed, while the Work itself has been considerably enlarged and in some parts rewritten. The whole volume has been subjected to careful revision. Throughout the preparation of this edition the Object has, been to make the Work complete and comprehensive; to include every point, whilst keeping the volume within reasonable limits. The thanks of the Editor are due to Mr. Roger E. Willcocks, Of the Middle Temple, for the work of revising the proofs. John Maynard Keynes, then a rising young economist, participated in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 as chief representative of the British Treasury and advisor to Prime Minister David Lloyd George. He resigned after desperately trying and failing to reduce the huge demands for reparations being made on Germany. The Economic Consequences of the Peace is Keynes' brilliant and prophetic analysis of the effects that the peace treaty would have both on Germany and, even more fatefully, the world.
