This study examines the effects of homogeneous and heterogeneous groupings in middle school mathematics on achievement. 6th and 7th grade students' mathematics scores on a standardized test over a three month period were compared to determine the effect, in any, on their academic progress. The data showed that although homogeneously grouped students' showed some modest academic gain among the higher ability students, lower ability students in a homogeneous group did not show any improvement in their score, and in some cases, to the contrary, their scores were lower.

Published in 1986, this book addresses the controversial classroom dilemma of ability segregation versus integration. It presents an extensive review of the current literature and formulates a conceptual framework for analysing the social processes that affect classroom composition and their effects on academic achievement. Applying an innovative framework to two empirical studies of Israeli high schools, the authors highlight the profound implications for classroom organisation, and include an explanation of teachers’ attitudes to pedagogical issues and social influences. Sociologists, teachers and educational psychologists will find this a stimulating but practical study of ability grouping and streaming in schools.

EdPsych Modules uses an innovative modular approach and case studies based on real-life classroom situations to address the challenge of effectively connecting theory and research to practice. Succinct, stand-alone modules are organized into themed units and offer instructors the flexibility to tailor the book’s contents to the needs of their course. The units begin with a set of case studies written for early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary classrooms, providing students with direct insight into the dynamics influencing the future students they plan to teach. All 25 modules highlight diversity, emphasizing how psychological factors adapt and change based on external influences such as sex, gender, race, language, disability status, and socioeconomic background. The Fourth Edition includes over three hundred new references across all 25 modules, and expanded coverage of diversity in new diversity-related research. This title is accompanied by a complete teaching and learning package.

The effects on homogeneous and heterogeneous grouping on the academic achievement of middle level students were investigated, the results indicated a preference for homogeneous grouping. Students of all ability levels had lower numerical averages when heterogeneously grouped in the sixth grade than when they were homogeneously grouped in the fifth grade. Also, with the exception of language arts, students had lower averages in each subject area when heterogeneously grouped.
