Excerpt from A Canadian Publishing House Now Barabbas was a publisher but the fallacy of this innuendo must be recognized when it is consider ed that only the most friendly relations between author and publisher can produce the best results. Were they always trying to get the better of each other, the prospects for a nation's literature would be poor indeed. Neither can stand alone. Were there no publishers to broadcast an author's work to the world at large, his audience would be but small; were there no authors to write, the publisher's business could not exist. So they will always be necessary, the one to the other, and the more harmonious the relationship between them, the better will both succeed. The mac millan company of canada is proud of its friend ship with its authors and to the maintenance of such friendships it attributes the modest measure of success which has attended its career. Excerpt from Jessie Grey or the Discipline of Life: A Canadian Tale I believe that it depends, in a very great degree, upon the lessons learned and ideas implanted in your childhood, to make you the strong, earnest men and women our country will need. First of all these lessons comes - trust in God. A man who does not love God may love his country; but the true patriot is always the true Christian. Make this your study, dear children, to know and follow Him who hath so loved the world. Trusting and serving Him, we need not fear to leave in your hands the care of our beloved country. Excerpt from The Book of New Canadians The Book of New Canadians contains stories told by the children of twenty different countries. The stories de scribe the homes of about half the nations representatives of which have become citizens of Canada. Realising that it would be impossible in a book of this size to tell stories about all the different peoples now living in Canada, I consulted the latest census report of the Dominion Government. In the report the different nationals are listed in the order of the numbers resident in Canada. I chose the first twenty listed. Equally interesting and instructive stories about the other countries and their peoples could be told. Should these be called for a second book will, no doubt, be prepared. It is perhaps unnecessary to explain why stories of I France have not been included in the book. Since 1763 immigration from France has been very small, and as for the French Canadians they are much more anciently Canadian than the British Canadians. Excerpt from English-Canadian Literature AS Canada a voice of her own in literature distinct H from that of England P This question has attracted a good deal of attention in Canada and has been the subject of numerous discussions in home magazines and reviews. In Great Britain, however, the critical periodicals apparently have not yet recognized a purely Canadian1 literature. While these periodicals have frequently reviewed the literatures of Norway, Sweden, Russia, the United States, Spain, Italy and other countries, no British critic so far seems to have thought Canadian literary achievement of sufficient importance to treat it seriously as a whole or to look for its distinctive note. The United States has a literature fine and forceful, and though the language is the language of England the voice is her own: her writers have a vigorous national note, and narrate and sing the achievements of their ancestors and contemporaries in a manner characteristic of a nation that in so short a time has attained a giant's proportions. Has Canada such a voice? The answer is that she has not one of great volume, it is true; but, as we shall see, in poetry at least, the Canadian note is clear and distinct and the performance is of good quality and of permanent value. Excerpt from The Making of a Canadian To-day) and can vouch for the absolute truthfulness of the stories; also, that the people, places, and incidents are faithfully described and that the conditions of life then existing in the different parts of Canada, as por trayed by me in the pages of this book, were absolutely true at the time. I have written The Making of a Canadian at the urgent request of many of my most respected and honored friends, consisting of ministers of the gospel, lawyers, doctors, business men, and a prominent author. I was traveling through Louisiana, Texas, and other Southern states some time ago, and this particular author was my traveling companion. He had traveled extensively in all parts of the world. As my wanderings had carried me over a good part of Europe, as well as the United States and Canada, naturally our conversation drifted into reminiscences of personal experiences in our travels, and of course we had a great many to relate. After an absence of several months we returned to New York, and as we were saying good-bye he said: My dear boy, if I had at my disposal one-half of the interesting reminiscences of travel which you have related to me, I would most certainly group them together and make a book which would not only be interesting and instructive to young people, but highly entertaining to all who read it. Write it by all means. Many others have said the same thing, if not in the same words yet in substance the meaning was the same. Therefore I have written this book of stories, entitled The Making of a Cana dian, which is a truthful recital of the life and adven tures of Jack Arling, the hero of the book. I will feel.
