Excerpt from A Calendar to the Records of the Borough of Doncaster, Vol. 4 It will be observed that the earlier Volumes are not merely records of the proceedings of the Corporation, but also contain entries of the exercise of civil and criminal jurisdiction, both by the Corporation, as Lords of the Manor, and by the Mayor and senior Aldermen, as Magistrates, and notably is this the case with the second Volume, to the contents of which reference will be made later. To the inclusion of this matter is no doubt to be attributed the title of Courtiers given to these Volumes, a title which, surviving to the present day, now applies merely to the minutes of the proceedings of the Corporation acting as the Municipal Authority. Probably the present Volume of the Calendar will prove of greater interest to the general reader than any of the preceeding ones, especially so to the residents in Doncaster and the immediate vicinity, who will find in the accompanying records a mass of information at all times instructive and frequently amusing, to the more characteristic features of which it is only possible very briefly to allude.
