One farmworker tells of the soil that would “bite” him, but that was the chemicals burning his skin. Others developed lupus, asthma, diabetes, kidney failure, or suffered myriad symptoms with no clear diagnosis. Some miscarried or had children with genetic defects, while others developed cancer. In Fed Up, Dale Slongwhite collects the nearly inconceivable and chilling oral histories of African American farmworkers whose lives, and the lives of their families, were forever altered by one of the most horrific pesticide exposure incidents in United States’ history. For decades, the farms around Lake Apopka, Florida’s third largest lake, were sprayed with chemicals ranging from the now-banned DDT to toxaphene. Among the most productive farmland in America, the fields were doused with organochlorine pesticides, also known as persistent organic pollutants; the once-clear waters of the lake turned pea green; birds, alligators, and fish died at alarming rates; and still the farmworkers planted, harvested, packed, and shipped produce all over the country, enduring scorching sun, snakes, rats, injuries, substandard housing, low wages, and the endocrine disruptors that crop dusters dropped as they toiled. Eventually, state and federal dollars were allocated to buy out and close farms to attempt land restoration, water clean up, and wildlife rehabilitation. But the farmworkers became statistics, nameless casualties history almost forgot. Here are their stories, told in their own words.

2ND PETER 1: 19 And so we have the prophetic word confi rmed, which you do well to take heed as a light that shines in a dark place... There is a Light at the end of the tunnel. However, there is also a Light through the tunnel that can shine in the hearts of our understanding, which will guide us safely through the darkness of ignorance, to a place of peace, security and confidence. Although some may promise many things in the name of science and technology, there is only one light ray of hope for eternity. Even as medical research strives to prolong life, it is a short-lived hope. For as the sand in the hourglass pours through the narrow opening, so our earthly lives pour through the opening of time, because our time here is measured. Whether we face this fact or not, these bodies are destined to die. However, our spirits do not, but will live in the light of mercy or in the darkness of error for eternity. Our days here are short and our time to leave could be nearer than we think, so we should listen to the words of eternal truth. We can easily listen to all the other voices of those that stumble in the blindness of doubt, or we can follow the true Light of all hope that is willing and able to take us home, even through our darkness nights. Two choices, two roads with two different destinations, but there is only one journey. EPHESIANS 1: 18 ... The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling...

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR and THE WASHINGTON POST "Compelling, insightful and important, Beneath a Ruthless Sun exposes the corruption of racial bigotry and animus that shadows a community, a state and a nation. A fascinating examination of an injustice story all too familiar and still largely ignored, an engaging and essential read." --Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy From the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller Devil in the Grove, the gripping true story of a small town with a big secret. In December 1957, the wife of a Florida citrus baron is raped in her home while her husband is away. She claims a "husky Negro" did it, and the sheriff, the infamous racist Willis McCall, does not hesitate to round up a herd of suspects. But within days, McCall turns his sights on Jesse Daniels, a gentle, mentally impaired white nineteen-year-old. Soon Jesse is railroaded up to the state hospital for the insane, and locked away without trial. But crusading journalist Mabel Norris Reese cannot stop fretting over the case and its baffling outcome. Who was protecting whom, or what? She pursues the story for years, chasing down leads, hitting dead ends, winning unlikely allies. Bit by bit, the unspeakable truths behind a conspiracy that shocked a community into silence begin to surface. Beneath a Ruthless Sun tells a powerful, page-turning story rooted in the fears that rippled through the South as integration began to take hold, sparking a surge of virulent racism that savaged the vulnerable, debased the powerful, and roils our own times still.

In the context of one's lifetime, the journey was a momentary fragment, but the experience was all-consuming. Then suddenly, I was catapulted from a life of great joy into the depths of despair. The pain, the loss, and the grief were incomprehensible. Acceptance and transformation emerged slowly. Beautiful memories and my faith in God and the human spirit gave me the courage to pull myself together, explore new opportunities, and begin again. These pages recall the journey, with all the joys, the sorrows, and the dreams coming full circle. Standing in the Sun recounts how I survived loss, transcended grief, and learned to embrace life once again. It is written with the hope of helping families cope through critical illness and loss of a loved one, and for those who are struggling to get their life back on track. I wish readers the faith, the love, and the audacity to envelope the mystery of life. And, may you enjoy the reading as much as I have savored the writing of these words.

While living in New Mexico, Nell falls in love with and marries a free-spirited horn player named Gauguin. They travel east to experience city life, and then to the Midwest to be closer to family, but their tempestuous relationship cools as Nell’s free-spiritedness and Jewishness seem under constant scrutiny. For solace, Nell turns to her friend Anna, a writer who teaches Nell what it means to be an artist. Nell is slowly transformed by love, loss, and art, gaining a new sense of self. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Natalie Goldberg, including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.
