Excerpt from The Vineland Historical Magazine, Vol. 1: Devoted to History, Biography, Genealogy; January, 1916 In the summer of 1861 Charles K. Landis, of Philadelphia, then a young man of twenty-eight, entered into an agreement with Richard D. Wood to take over a great tract of wild land, containing some acres crossed by the newly completed railroad from Glassboro to Millville. This wilderness of sand and swamp, pines and scrub-oaks was destined to be converted into the beautiful town of Vineland and the fruitful farms of the Vineland tract. The man who accomplished this transformation was one of those rare idealists who combine the power to dream large dreams with the practical ability to execute them. His purpose in starting the settle ment is best expressed in his own words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Studies on the Vineland Voyages Adam's account alone, brief though it is, has likewise great importance as a source of historical lore. It is, to begin with, the earliest; dating from about the year 1070, it shows the tradition to have been then still fresh and unimpaired in the Northern countries, and points back to the same period of which the Icelandic tradition relates. Then, it is independent of manuscript Icelandic literature, the trustworthiness of which it serves to assure. Two fea tures of the work must have special notice here. First, it has handed down to us knowledge of Vineland's cultivable plants, partly obscured in the Icelandic tradition. Vine land wa's remarkable for its Wild grape-vine (cites spouts hascuntur), and also for its Corn of Spontaneous Growth (fmges non seminatw). Secondly, we must bear in mind, that Adam merely speaks of the discovery of Vineland, not, as in the case of Greenland, of its colonization and the introduction of Christianity; this quite agrees with the Icelandic tradition, according to which Vineland, soon after its discovery, was abandoned by the Norsemen with out being colonized.
