Excerpt from A Bibliography of South America I have divided my subject into two parts the first contains an alphabetically arranged list of authors with only such works as they have written on South America included beneath their names; the second and more im portant part contains a list of all these works re-arranged and classified under their various subject headings so far as my information on their contents is correct. They are also' classified according to their dates of publication so that the order in which books have followed one another in their various sections may be easily noted. This second part includes every book or magazine article in English upon any subject dealing with South America which has come within my view, and includes many items which for want of further information cannot appear in the first part. This work is the result of many searchings into all sorts of odd places and much labour in arranging and re-arranging the titles under their most suitable subject headings, it was first compiled for the purpose of, gaining some idea of the written available knowledge dealing with Argentina but the necessity for taking a broader view of my subject was soon discovered and I had to extend the originally intended Bibliography of Argentina to the more comprehensive title of South America, justifying the change by including an additional collection of titles of works on the other Republics of this Continent. Excerpt from South America Indians were concerned. This state of affairs ap plied, Oi course, more to the Open prairie than to the forest lands. In these latter were fruits and roots which added not a little to the range of such meals as the slain animals afforded, and which thus made it possible to remain more or less permanently in one neighbourhood. Even here, however, the habitations of the sylvan tribes never rose in dignity beyond a structure of boughs and dried grasses. A remarkable contrast to the habits and customs of these untutored folk was afforded by the kingdom of the Incas. The degree of civilisation which was attained by these remark able people is now - thanks to the works of Prescott, Markham, and the rest - too well known to need any detailed description here. Excerpt from A Brief Bibliography of Books in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Relating to the Republics Commonly Called Latin American: With Comments The method pursued in making up the list was as fol lows: first, to introduce the titles of widely heralded works, without regard to their merit, in order to discriminate be tween them; and, second, to bring forward less well known publications so as to draw attention to their excellencies. To have listed only such as could be commended would have failed to furnish that perspective which is essential to giving prominence to works of real merit. If it should occur to any that some of the comments are slightly censorious, what follows is offered as an explana tion and an excuse.
