This major bibliographic work reflects the significant interest in Latin American literature as a creative force in the world today. Rela who has provided Latin American bibliography with many ground-breaking contributions, has created a single, comprehensive reference work for serious scholarship on Latin American literature with sources through 1986. Among the criteria used to determine which authors and works would be included are originality, critical appraisal, and the interest the work held for professors, researchers, and students. The works are divided into general sections; each section is broken down by country and by genre (poetry, prose fiction, drama, essay) and annotations are provided for many works. The book concludes with an author index.

Excerpt from A Handy Bibliographical Guide to the Study of the Spanish Language and Literature: With Consideration of the Works of Spanish-American Writers, for the Use of Students and Teachers of Spanish This little pamphlet has been developed entirely through practical necessities, and it is intended only to serve practical ends. Its chief aim has not been bibliographical completeness, but to offer to the American teacher and student a selection of such works and periodicals as will be really necessary and useful in the study of Spanish. It is hoped that not many books of real importance for the ordinary student have been overlooked and that in every case the best books of reference have been mentioned. Librarians of colleges and of public libraries, wishing to provide the most necessary books for the study of Spanish, may be also materially helped in their selection by referring to this Guide. As each teacher or student should make it his duty to have a library of his own, the attempt has been made to indicate briefly the character of the books listed, and the greatest care has been taken to mention reliable cheap editions. Whoever makes a selection of books is liable to be criticised for admitting certain books and omitting others; but I shall receive thankfully any suggestion or criticism that may be made for the improvement of this little book, by those who are using it. I wish to express my thanks to Mr. Fred. W. Boettler for his critical reading of the manuscript and for his careful reading of the proof. Many readers are unaware of the vast universe of Latin American science fiction, which has its roots in the 18th century and has flourished to the present day. Because science fiction is part of Latin American popular culture, it reflects cultural and social concerns and comments on contemporary society. While there is a growing body of criticism on Latin American science fiction, most studies treat only a single author or work. This reference offers a broad overview of Latin American science fiction. Included are alphabetically arranged entries on 70 Latin American science fiction writers. While some of these are canonical figures, others have been largely neglected. Since much of science fiction has been written by women, many women writers are profiled. Each entry is prepared by an expert contributor and includes a short biography, a discussion of the writer's works, and primary and secondary bibliographies. The volume closes with a general bibliography of anthologies and criticism.
