Excerpt from Three Essays on Australian Weather The following essays on "Australian Weather" have been brought together and published in book form by the Hon. Ralph Abercromby, for convenient reference by students of Meteorology, because he thinks that they are important contributions to our knowledge of the Meteorology of a new field. In passing it may be mentioned that the preparation of them has been made possible by the very complete Meteorological records of the Sydney Observatory, especially the continuous automatic records of wind, rain, barometer, and weather charts introduced by the present Director. These afford the means of reference to wind and weather at any moment since 1863, and the barograph since 1870, without which it would have been impossible to study in the necessary detail the so-called "Southerly Burster," which is perhaps the most remarkable of the "squall" winds which are found in various parts of the earth. The first essay, "Moving Anticyclones," is here reproduced with the consent of the author. It establishes the progressive easterly motion of weather over Australia. Climate change is the hottest topic of the twenty-first century and the climate movement a significant global social movement. This book examines the broad context of Australian climate politics and the place of the climate movement within it. Acting ‘from above’ are the most powerful forces—corporations and governments, both Labor and Coalition—with the media framing the issues. Climate movement actors ‘in the middle’ include the Australian Greens, major environmental and climate organisations, think-tanks, academics, public intellectuals and the union movement. Acting ‘from below’ are the numerous local climate action groups and various regional and national networks. This lowest level is the primary location of the climate movement; and grassroots mobilisation the source of its vitality. To advocate a safe climate and climate justice, the book ends by offering a vision for an alternative Australia based upon the principles of social equity and environmental sustainability.

"Weather is the oldest story in the world-one we want to keep on telling each other when we meet, as though it were part of who we are, a story that wants to keep on telling itself, and affecting us, whether we like it or not. We breathe it in; we see embodied in it our fears and desires; it falls on our heads. And we'd better take care of it: our lives are in its hands." Marrying photographs from the collection of the National Library of Australia with an evocative and contemplative essay by poet Mark Tredinnick, Australia's Wild Weather is a lyric field guide to Australia's climate. Tredinnick considers what it means to be living at time when weather is no longer small talk; it is most of the news. Beautifully written, the author contemplates what weather means to us and how it affects our daily lives.
