One of the pathways by which the scientific community confirms the validity of a new scientific discovery is by repeating the research that produced it. When a scientific effort fails to independently confirm the computations or results of a previous study, some fear that it may be a symptom of a lack of rigor in science, while others argue that such an observed inconsistency can be an important precursor to new discovery. Concerns about reproducibility and replicability have been expressed in both scientific and popular media. As these concerns came to light, Congress requested that the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conduct a study to assess the extent of issues related to reproducibility and replicability and to offer recommendations for improving rigor and transparency in scientific research. Reproducibility and Replicability in Science defines reproducibility and replicability and examines the factors that may lead to non-reproducibility and non-replicability in research. Unlike the typical expectation of reproducibility between two computations, expectations about replicability are more nuanced, and in some cases a lack of replicability can aid the process of scientific discovery. This report provides recommendations to researchers, academic institutions, journals, and funders on steps they can take to improve reproducibility and replicability in science.

The Practice of Reproducible Research presents concrete examples of how researchers in the data-intensive sciences are working to improve the reproducibility of their research projects. In each of the thirty-one case studies in this volume, the author or team describes the workflow that they used to complete a real-world research project. Authors highlight how they utilized particular tools, ideas, and practices to support reproducibility, emphasizing the very practical how, rather than the why or what, of conducting reproducible research. Part 1 provides an accessible introduction to reproducible research, a basic reproducible research project template, and a synthesis of lessons learned from across the thirty-one case studies. Parts 2 and 3 focus on the case studies themselves. The Practice of Reproducible Research is an invaluable resource for students and researchers who wish to better understand the practice of data-intensive sciences and learn how to make their own research more reproducible.

GPU Computing Gems Emerald Edition offers practical techniques in parallel computing using graphics processing units (GPUs) to enhance scientific research. The first volume in Morgan Kaufmann's Applications of GPU Computing Series, this book offers the latest insights and research in computer vision, electronic design automation, and emerging data-intensive applications. It also covers life sciences, medical imaging, ray tracing and rendering, scientific simulation, signal and audio processing, statistical modeling, video and image processing. This book is intended to help those who are facing the challenge of programming systems to effectively use GPUs to achieve efficiency and performance goals. It offers developers a window into diverse application areas, and the opportunity to gain insights from others' algorithm work that they may apply to their own projects. Readers will learn from the leading researchers in parallel programming, who have gathered their solutions and experience in one volume under the guidance of expert area editors. Each chapter is written to be accessible to researchers from other domains, allowing knowledge to cross-pollinate across the GPU spectrum. Many examples leverage NVIDIA's CUDA parallel computing architecture, the most widely-adopted massively parallel programming solution. The insights and ideas as well as practical hands-on skills in the book can be immediately put to use. Computer programmers, software engineers, hardware engineers, and computer science students will find this volume a helpful resource. For useful source codes discussed throughout the book, the editors invite readers to the following website: ..." - Covers the breadth of industry from scientific simulation and electronic design automation to audio / video processing, medical imaging, computer vision, and more - Many examples leverage NVIDIA's CUDA parallel computing architecture, the most widely-adopted massively parallel programming solution - Offers insights and ideas as well as practical "hands-on" skills you can immediately put to use

Parallel CFD 2004, the sixteenth international conference on Parallel Computational Fluid Dynamics and other modern scientific domains, has been held since May 24th till May 27th, 2004 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. The specialized, high-level Parallel CFD conferences are organised on travelling locations all over the world, yearly because of multidisciplinary subject of parallel CFD and its rapidly evolving nature. The conference featured 8 invited lectures, 3 Mini Symposia, contributed papers and one Tutorial & Short Course. More than 80 multi-disciplinary presentations of the Parallel CFD had been presented, with participants from 17 countries. The sessions involved contributed papers on many diverse subjects including turbulence, complex flows, unstructured and adaptive grids, industrial applications, developments in software tools and environments as parallel optimization tools. This Book presents an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in parallel computational fluid dynamics.- Report on current research in the field.- Researchers around the world are included.- Subject is important to all interested in solving large fluid dynamics problems.- It is of interest to researchers in computer science, engineering and physical sciences.- It is an interdisciplinary activity. Contributions include scientists with a variety of backgrounds.- It is an area which is rapidly changing.

This work brings together previously unpublished notes contributed by participants of the IUTAM Symposium on Hamiltonian Dynamics, Vortex Structures, Turbulence (Moscow, 25-30 August 2006). The study of vortex motion is of great interest to fluid and gas dynamics: since all real flows are vortical in nature, applications of the vortex theory are extremely diverse, many of them (e.g. aircraft dynamics, atmospheric and ocean phenomena) being especially important.

The book collects extended original contributions presented at the first ECCOMAS Conference on Meshless Methods held in 2005 in Lisbon. The list of contributors is a mix of highly distinguished authors as well as promising young researchers. This means that the reader gets a varied and contemporary view on different mesh reduction methods and its range of applications. The material presented is appropriate for researchers, engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians and graduate students interested in this active research area.

Parallel CFD 2000, the Twelfth in an International series of meetings featuring computational fluid dynamics research on parallel computers, was held May 22-25, 2000 in Trondheim, Norway.Following the trend of the past conferences, areas such as numerical schemes and algorithms, tools and environments, load balancing, as well as interdisciplinary topics and various kinds of industrial applications were all well represented in the work presented. In addition, for the first time in the Parallel CFD conference series, the organizing committee chose to draw special attention to certain subject areas by organizing a number of special sessions. We feel the emphasis of the papers presented at the conference reflect the direction of the research within parallel CFD at the beginning of the new millennium. It seems to be a clear tendency towards increased industrial exploitation of parallel CFD. Several presentations also demonstrated how new insight is being achieved from complex simulations, and how powerful parallel computers now make it possible to use CFD within a broader interdisciplinary setting.Obviously, successful application of parallel CFD still rests on the underlying fundamental principles. Therefore, numerical algorithms, development tools, and parallelization techniques are still as important as when parallel CFD was in is infancy. Furthermore, the novel concepts of affordable parallel computing as well as metacomputing show that exciting developments are still taking place. As is often pointed out however, the real power of parallel CFD comes from the combination of all the disciplines involved: Physics, mathematics, and computer science. This is probably one of the principal reasons for the continued popularity of the Parallel CFD Conferences series, as well as the inspiration behind much of the excellent work carried out on the subject. We hope that the papers in this book, both on an individual basis and as a whole, will contribute to that inspiration. Further details of Parallel CFD'99, as well as other conferences in this series, are available at http://www.parcfd.org
